Gusler (2656), Tucson, Arizona, USA Sep 30, 2002 Re-Rate 01/05/02: Deep dark brown, generous beige head and sheets of lace. Nose is malt, lightly smoked, caramel, and the front begins sweet, the top is full, the finish is dry, acidic, nicely hopped and the abv warms the ’Belly’. My favorite of all the smoked beers, and ranks in the top 5 on my master list of porters.
Re-Rate 09/30/02: As deep as garnet gets, before we call it brown, the head is ’Chocolate’, frothy, long lasting, the lace clings in thick sheets till the very bottom of the glass. Nose is deep malt, lightly smoked, sweet, caramel, and even a hint of coffee. Front is sweet malt, the top is medium to full, the finish is of course ’Smokey’, nicely hopped, light to moderate carbonation, dry, and a nice long lasting bitter after taste. Call me a ’Stone-o-phile’, but I like the over the top hops, high abv’s, big malts and that robustness, only found in a few brewers beers, such as ’Alesmith’. Ranks #39 on my current 1000 beer master list.
thefle (26), , New Jersey, USA Oct 12, 2008 bottle. dark brown has a smokey/ nutty tastse to it, could be a bit stronger but its a solid buy ilovedarkbeer (766), Dallas, Texas, USA Oct 10, 2008 Dark black brown pour with some reddish highlights. Decent sized tan head that is frothy. Nose is roasted malt. chocolate, smoke, coffee. Taste is about the same. Goes does smooth with a moderate mouthfeel. A well crafted beer that does everything well and nothing outstanding. Strykzone (1020), Wood River, Illinois, USA Oct 8, 2008 Looks like a classic porter with an almost black body and a nice tan head that lasts a good while and offers some sticky lacing. A nice classic porter aroma as well with roasted notes, coffee, and chocolate. Smoke and peat are also noticeable. Flavor is delightful with, again, those classic porter flavors. Chocolate, coffee, smoke, and just a smidge of hop. The smoke is not dominant and is just enough to add character. Feel is silky smooth and substantial. I like the moderate ABV. The good news is that it was a 22 oz. bottle. The bad news is that it was only 22 ounces. Absolutely delicious. Collint (348), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Oct 8, 2008 bottle, pours a almost black beer with a light tan head. Aroma is malty and smokey. Flavor is sweet, bitter and dry of light choco, smoked malt, molasses. Decent, but a little bit waterd down. TikiE (352), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Oct 8, 2008 Bottled: a really really good porter. Pours a dark color with a tan froathy head. Smells of malts and chocolate. Tastes of light roasted malts with hints of chocolate and a dry finish. Good beer!
