Appears dark brown with a cream-colored head – just a shade lighter than your average stout. Aroma is brightly floral with a hint of black-ashy malt. Lemonade and bubblegum come to mind in the nose. The palate is medium-light, allowing this ale to swish easily over one’s tongue. Self-Righteous starts with a blend of floral hops and “crème brulee” (a toasted/caramel blend of flavors). The finish is indeed quite bitter and clean-tasting, with some late smoke. Overall, this is a pretty interesting concoction, much like Southern Tier’s Iniquity but better. It is a fantastic drinking experience for its ability to shock you with the juxtaposition of black coloration and floral, IPA like body. Reminded me of a black Arrogant Bastard with a bit more smoke!
update on Stone 11th Anniversary Ale 11/1/09 notes: bomber. Pours brown with heavy lacing and a beige head. Aroma is dried strawberries, pine, and milk chocolate. Palate is medium, very lightly carbonated. Flavor is a interesting blend, very hard to put a finger on. Piney hops, semisweet dark chocolate, honeydew, dark malt, bubble gum sweetness. Well, I’m not sure if my rating of this beer should affect it’s near-finalized score; it is clearly a hoppy beer that has been matured to its detriment. And I knew that coming in, but it was worth a try. At this point, Sublimely Self Righteous is a way more satisfying black IPA. 3.4. Skeets (24), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 9, 2009 Great aroma with that slight bit of malt in there. Nice strong IIPA hoppiness in the flavor. Has got slight more bitter finish than I would prefer, but a great all round beer. Would get more if I could find them. beerandIT (190), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 9, 2009 So happy they made the 11th stick around! Pours a dark black with about an inch of head fading away slowly but leaving some nice lacing on the glass with the first few sips. Medium bodied beer. On the aroma I am getting hops, some of that west coast citrus, get those dark roasted malts hiding in there a bit as well. I like what they were going for here and the other black IPAs or beers that are calling themselves this pale in comparison to me. Stone has set the benchmark here. leems (149), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 9, 2009 22oz bottle, pours a black with a large tan head, so much lacing! Aroma is mild bitter chocolate and some pine hop. Flavor is initial bitter, a tinge of sweetness. Bitter dark chocolate, coffee, pine hops. arondee (177), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 5, 2009 Pours a dark black with a thick brown head, tons of lacing, small amount of carbonation. Lots of grapefruit and bitter dark chocolate in the aroma. The taste is very bitter, overwhelming at first, there’s also a really nice sweetness to it. This beer continues to get better and better as I drink it. By the 5 or 6th sip you can’t taste the alcohol anymore and the bitterness has become really nice. This beer is super hoppy. Wow what a great surprise. Like a triple IPA with a little bit of chocolate and a slight sweetness to it. Amazing! timsilvia32 (447), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 5, 2009 22 oz. Anniversary ale bottle. Dark brown/black pour. Frothy tan head. A little musty smelling, with piney hop and some roast and burnt malt. Taste has plenty of roasted malt, some dark chocolate. Very clean finishing with biter coffee, bakers chocolate, pretty dry. Medium bodied with good carbonation. I think 1 year of age would have been about perfect, this was just a little over. The 2 years really mellowed the hops, which was good for me. Good balance of malt, roast and hops. A real nice drinker, with only slightly high abv, which is not noticeable at all anyways. tgncc (843), Bellmore, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 4, 2009 The aroma is roasty, and hoppy, and a dank basement aroma (wierd). Some unsweetned chocolate in there too. The aroma is crazy, and very enticing. The appearance makes it resemble a stout, deep brown/black, tan head. The flavor is roasty, chocolatey, piney hops (the only thing that separates this from a stout in flavor). The mouthfeel is thick, syrupy, with noticable carbonation - nice. The finish is where the piney hops dominate, and linger for a while. Nicely crafted brew, very enjoyable. It’s hard to put a label on this guy. To me, I think it’s a variation of a stout blasted with hops. Complex and interesting in both aroma and flavor. PorterPounder (3148), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 3, 2009 Athens, Ga. - Five Points Bottle Shop - 22 oz bomber. Pours an almost tar black with a tight khaki colored head that sticks around a while. Fresh "cat urine" like hop aroma (in a good way) with loads of sprucey goodness that sits just right. Flavor is hoppy indeed with some nice licorice hints to sit alongside the usual grapefruity hoppiness. Hints of chocolate come through in the back end. Sticky, rich mouthfeel. Have yet to tire of Stone’s products.
