Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Bottle courtesy of sholland119 poured into a tulip. It’s the original Stone 11th Anny, not the newer incarnation. Pours a dark mahogany that settles in almost-black in the glass underneath a huge three-finger tan head that sticks to the glass impressively as it recedes to a small cap. The aroma has retained quite a bit of its hops despite being well over a year old. It’s mostly citrus hops in the nose with lots of grapefruit. Hints of caramel malts, but not too much. The taste has some of the citrus hops up front but hasn’t retained the hops quite as well as the aroma indicated. There is more of a malty base with some caramel sweetness and a slight floral hop bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and sticky, with what remains of the hops stinging the palate in the finish. This is still a very good beer, but I’ll definitely be looking for the new version to see what it tastes like fresh.

I’m not the most technical person, but I’d say this Ale is something I long for now that I can’t get it in my little out of the way county in CA. I love the hop aroma, then the dark, malty, yet bitter flavors and to finish it all off the hop taste lingers enticing you to drink more.

Malt, toffee, cream, chocolate and orange in the nose. Medium to heavy body, deep amber to light brown color. Citrus still dominates flavor, but the backbone is caramel, toffee, chocolate, roast. Drier finish, slightly creamy, medium bitterness. Interesting.

A- Pours a dark brown/black with some dark garnet edges, head is brown/tan with a creamy texture that dissipates very slowly, nice dark lacing throughout S- Nose is distinctly "Stone IPA" with big bold swaths of pine and citrus hops cutting through the olfactory senses, some sweet malts along for the ride in the background and modest alcohol presence that will not be overlooked (I also caught a bit of smoke, vanilla, and wood as it warmed up) T- Initial taste hits you with a strong push of grapefruit/pine hops and a bit of vanilla and slowly transitions to some sweet malts, finish is lasting and characterized by dry bitterness and alcohol warming down the throat M- Medium/full bodied ale with smooth and slick mouthfeel backed by a good amount of carbonation D- Getting close to 9% abv means you have to watch yourself with this beer, the aroma carries more alcohol presence than the actual flavors, but this specialty release deserves to be enjoyed slowly (not in mass quantities)

11th Anny on-tap at Ashley’s in Ann Arbor. Pours a dark black, with little head. Smells is an unmatched combination of roasted coffee and hops. Taste follows this. It finishes clean and hoppy, but the body is full and rich sweet coffee. A treat for your tongue.

Opaque black with a tinge of ruby, frothy two finger head that dissipated to a rather thick film and fantastic lacing. Sharp pine hops hits hard, followed quickly by grapefruit and orange. Taste follows, supported by a solid toasted malt backbone and a smokey, almost ash-like quality. Full bodied, medium carbonation, and complex aftertaste of the piney hops with an increasingly strong maltiness. Outstanding.
