Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Bottle thanks to alexsdad06. Dark brown with great big brown head. A lot of rosated malt on the nose, spice and hoppy. Flavor is much the same, with a more malt than I was expecting. The creamy texture is somthing that I always enjoy from Stone’s beers, and this one didn’t let me down. Very nice hints of dried fruit and chocolate towards the finish.

It was black with tan fluffy head, and had a strong aroma. It had a fruity chocolate taste that reminded me of liquorice.

Bottle, 22oz, thx to thewolf. It pours a clear, dark brown body with a dense beige head on top. It has a lovely aroma with chocolate, coffee, sweetness and dried fruiots, as well as a lovely hop profile with pine, resin and citrus, mostly orange. Chocolate and coffee flavor, rather burnt, with fruity hop flavors, citrus notes, pine and resin. Full, rather dry mouthfeel, and a long, piney and resiny finish with citrus. This is one of those lovely beers with layers and layers of aroma and flavor. The aroma being the best of those though. Nice. (080301)

Poured from 22oz bomber a clear brown-black with a good sized tan head. Nose is a rush of citrus and pine floral hops with a smidgen of toasted bread. The flavor is mostly IPAish with the dominate notes being floral hops, gratefruit, pine resin and some hay. You are also confronted with malty caramel and a small amount of brown sugar and roast coffee or soy. A very different type of black beer. Good drinking with a lingering bitterness on the tongue.

This was enjoyed back-to-back with Double Bastard. Beautiful dark brown, silky looking pour with a big tan head. Hop power dominates the aroma, but there is a dried berry element in the aroma too. Massive hop attack is soothed by the rich dark malt profile, with a terrific figgy fruit softness that makes this pure joy to drink. Fantastic!

Stone does another winner. Very interesting beer, because it is stout black, with a comparable head. Big, frothy and tan. Smell is reminiscent of Arrogant Bastard, but with the roasted overtones of the dark malt. Flavor is hops obviously (Stone’s specialty)- but with a rich chocolate malt background that is missing in the bastard series, or ruination series. Bottle was 8 months old when I had it, and I guess it would age well, as that is the suggestion. I’m not sure I would consider this an aging beer (of course, I never keep any around long enough to officially call them "cellared"). I will absolutely make another trip to pick up some more of these. Beers like this (both in quality and style) are not easy to find.

22 oz bomber. Pours a deep brown with red highlights. 1/2" off white head and lacing you’d have to chisel off. Nose is citrus and pine. Moderate mouthfeel. Taste is dominated by hops with dark fruit flavors. Every sip is bitter, but pleasent with a malty background.
