Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Not as good as I expected. I have 5 more bottles so I am going to age it and see if it improves. Too much spice and corriander.

Was quite sad about this one after reading some glowing reviews here and having it within a few days of a Hop Rod Rye. it’s just didn’t gel - too much bitter hop action overtop the mild body

Big, juicy, spicey, hop nose. Just gorgeous punching through the frothy khaki head. Classic porter color, even though the dress does not bely the perfume. The hop nose twines around the developed malt and hop rythym of the first sip. I love a duet. Comforting malt richness is quickly checked by a welcomed hop presence in the form of citrus rind and fresh coffee. Well balanced all the way through. Finishes with a bright balance of hop oil and roasty malt. Weird beer??? I’ll buy it. Hopefully this won’t be the last bottle I entertain.

Looks heavier then it actually is. Brown, dark brown body with mild sized head. IIPA nose of citrus, pine with some out of character fruits mixing in. Very tasty, bringing out some roasted malts to tag along with the strong IPAness. Prefer their earlier anniv editions, but this was definitly a good outing as well.

black body..smell like their arrogant bastard, double bastard, oaked arrogant, and every other beer they brew...nice floral/piney flavor with subtle hints of bread, toast, nuts, and cloves..very resinous...maybe some chocolate in there too...nicely laced

Dirty greige, fine-bubbled and dense head over near black beer with granat highlights. Hoppy, concentrated USA hops nose, with a typical maltsyrup, cake, raisins backing. Soft light bitterish taste with a very extensive malts underbuild. Hopflavours abound, but never superimpose. A well-baked prunecake with a hopgift. Very finely, expressively Champenoise pearling, alightening a near syrupy/full-bodied beer. Typical Stone. But in the best way imaginable - great. Thanks, Carl.

[1020-20070131] 1pt6floz (w/ jerc; Bottled Sep-07). Sweet pineapple hops aroma has a bit of grassy leaf. Dark dark brown red body wih a long-lasting creamy tan head. Sweet roasted pineapple flavour has earthy grass notes. Medium body is bitter throughout. Nice hoppy beverage.

22oz. bottle, courtesy of hellbilly. Fairly mild and unusual aroma, featuring notes of dark toffee and roasty, sweet malts, even some faint cocoa, along with juicy, fresh pineapple, orange, raspberry and doughy black bread. Deep, dark brown in color with mahogany highlights and a fine, thin, subsiding head. Flavor profile reflects a far greater amount of hops than indicated by the nose, with a lasting, pronounced bitterness and citric character, combining with the darkly toasted, sugary malts, finishing with a light amount of raisin and chocolate to go along with the persistent, earthy hop presence and slight peppery alcohol that creeps in late. Semi-dry, prickly and well-carbonated on the palate with a full body. Certainly good, if not entirely avoiding the sort of "trainwreck" nature one might imagine a Black Double IPA to have.
