Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

22oz From Total Wine. really black and opaque. a slight shade of dark rubt when held before bright light. Thick foamy head that lasts and laces the glass well. Piney hop aroma, spruce, some peach in there also with a late detection of a nutty roasted malt. Medium body and only slightly oily. Flavor is a good balance of hops and malt, There is nothing really outstanding about this beer but it is a really well made brew.

Another great addition from Stone. I wouldn’t categorize this is an American Strong though. This brew tends to sway me more towards a dark IPA. It has all the same characteristics....save the color. Good looking dark brown with ruby highlights. Nice sized, sticky two-finger tan head. The aroma is resinous candied grapefruit and malt...some lingering alcohol sugars. Medium-to-full size body. Flavors of an IPA still dominate my inital findings. Medium bitterness, grapefruit pith, pine sap with a mild florality coupled with soft brown sugar notes. Finishes slightly bitter. Nicely balanced.

This is a deceiving beer because it is dark in color but tastes much more like a Double IPA (which it is.) The dark malt is overtaken by the hoppiness. Most of the sweetness of the hops taken away. A little too bitter (not sure if it is the hop choice or just my expectation.) Still a good beer and I am glad I gave it a try.

Bottle thanks to richlikebeer. Has a dark brown color to it with a little white head. Has a bit of a hoppy smell to it. Big hop taste also with a little caramel in it. Would be better if it weren’t so hoppy

Pours a deep, opaque chocolaty brown with a thick, fine-bubbled, light tan head that hangs around for a bit. Aroma is strongly hoppy and has a hint of spice. Fiercely hoppy flavor makes drinking this beer like drinking a pine tree; it is fairly bitter but not ferociously so. Thick and silky smooth texture leaves a nice tingle and a hint of honey sweetness.

This brew smells potent and aged for sure. It is dark and had plenty of sediment for being aged a year. It has a strong flavor as it should with malts and boozy notes.

Draft at redlight redlight. Pours black and opaque, full bodied but not excessively for an IPA. The nose is amazing. Smells like a beautiful North Western forest: overwhelming pine, earthiness, and hints of a fresh rain fall. The flavor is smoother than one would expect, at least for a hop head. Still the hop profile is up front and powerful, but a nice maltiness balances it all perfectly. Good beer? Great beer.

1st June 2008. Very dark brown beer. Hoppy like an IPA. The hops are smooth and juicy with very little bitterness. The dark malt is also smooth and provides some balance to all the hops. Creamy malt finish. Lovely.
