Commercial Description:
A moderately strong Belgian Abbey-style beer. The traditional yeast strain imparts a complex assortment of spicy phenolic and fruity flavors Hints of clove, plum and raisin permeate this rich, malty and full-bodied beer. And its lofty, tan head sits gracefully atop the seductive, deep mahogany nectar.

5/6/02 bottle filled within centimeters of the cap. Deep chestnut wiht a thick, eggshell head. An aroma comprised of sweet and sour cherries, raisins, iron, varied nuts, residual malty sweetness and fig. Nice yeasty character as well. Fruity, yeasty flavors dominate. Sweet, dark fruits mixed with the sour cherries and iron. Spiced bread joins in every once in a while. A pretty nice beer with a nice combination of sweet and sour. However, teh body with a bit thin and not everything meshed as well as I think they could.

Bottled version dated 5/30/01. Pours a deep ruby body with a medium tan head. Aroma is malt, fruit, and light sugar tones. The taste is sweetened malts, ripe fruit, and thin spice. Very pleasant. Good finish but there is a slight bitter or acidic hint.

Pours deep red with nice foamy head. Aroma stands out more after it warmed up. Raisins, dark fruits, and malty. Flavor is sweet with dark fruits. Not overly complex and a little thin but a tasty Dubbel.

I tasted this immediately after sampling a Lagunitas Brown Shugga, so my taste buds were probably off a bit. Flavor is sour like biting into a green pippin apple that was just plucked off the tree. Strong citrus with some nutty tones. But rather mouth puckering.

Pours a light copper color with a tan head that fades quickly. The aroma is surprisingly nutty, with a nice roasted malt sweetness and a bit of hops. The roasted component also shows in the flavor. A bit of fruity sweetness mixes in as well. The finish displays decent bitterness. The carbonation is very fine and helps the mouthfeel, which otherwise is a bit thin and astringent. The drinkability is good, but not great. A decent beer, but not one I would stock up on.

The smell is a sweet malty aroma. Color is dark amber with a strong bubbly head. Flavor is fine, but seems a little on the ho-hum side. There is a crisp finish to the beer which gives it a niuce lasting impression.

Had this at the kennett brew fest. It had a great dark appearence with a coffee and fruit nose and a quite complicated flavor as well.
