Commercial Description:
A moderately strong Belgian Abbey-style beer. The traditional yeast strain imparts a complex assortment of spicy phenolic and fruity flavors Hints of clove, plum and raisin permeate this rich, malty and full-bodied beer. And its lofty, tan head sits gracefully atop the seductive, deep mahogany nectar.

Very nice - and immediately hits my idea of what I think of when an abbey dubbel comes to mind. Malty/yeasty, rich and satisfying.

25 oz bottle. Cloudy, yeasty brown ale. Bready, earthy aroma. Nicely balanced - some sweet, some sour, some bitter. Alcohol is a bit "hot".

Bottle Vintage Date: 2/27/03. Virtually no head. Deep mahagony in color. Light aroma (had to take a very deep breath to detect a trace of chocolate). Tastes of chocolate with a sour aftertaste.

5 3 5 2 11 Re-rated. Bottle vintage ’04 tasted on 3/15/06 (thanks Mike!). Much better than the last one (must have gone bad). Aromas of chocolate, dark fruits, caramel, and yeast. Tastes of dark fruits, chocolate, vanilla, yeast, and caramel. Threw out the ratings from the bad bottle and rated from this one.

Near brown color with a fluffly tan head. Sweeter malty nose with aromas of caramel, light toffee, raisans and vanilla. Flavors lean towards the malty side this toffee and vanilla. Smooth, near syrup, feel. Light spiced finish. Good example of the style.

750 mL bottle, tulip glass. Caramel, almonds, cocoa malt aroma (M); flowery hops (L); dusty yeast aroma (M); cinnamon, clove, prune and a hint of smoke in the aroma. Muddy brown-orange body with a small, bone white, foamy head. Moderately sweet, moderately acidic flavor becomes a lightly bitter, moderately acidic, moderately sour finish. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. The bottom line is: strange...I wasn’t expecting this much sourness or such a limp body.

I really enjoyed drinking this. Split a bottle with Buck_Dich and Skaughty. I did not think it was a very true to style dubbel, but it was still very nice to drink. Lots of chocolate, carob, cocoa sweetness up front that ligners all the way through the bottle, intertwined with cinnamon, brown sugar and finishing off the flavor with some nice chewy candi sugar sweetness. Very nicely balanced.

Ruby brown color with a little tan head and a light spotty lacing. The aroma has belgian qualities with a strong dark maltiness. Some brown sugar & sweet tarts. The flavor is lightly sour from lactobacillus & a caramelized malt tail. Finishes tart and balanced.

750 ml bottle. Pours deep yellow, with a nice head. Aroma is of fruit, spices, yeast, and esters. Very malty at the finish, with a candi sugar, full bodied burst at the end.
