Smooth nuttyness and slightly tannic as dark grains make an appearance. Sightly sour and grainy but finishes clean with bread and roasted malts. IMtheOptimator (1161), Bethel, Connecticut, USA

Sweet and yeasty aroma with some bubble gum and some cheap soy sauce. Flavor is sweet dark fruits, honey wheat bread, a bit of charred smoke and that same soy sauce character. The heavy soy and breadiness sort of detracted a bit from my enjoyment of this. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA

Really great, full aroma - filled with raisins, figs, malts - heavy on the brown sugar. With its strong sweetness, I would imagaine that the alcohol was higher than it is, but no matter, it is very good overall. notalush (2686), Denver, Colorado, USA

Pours a clear, dark brown color with a small off-white head and just a little bit of lacing. Aroma is roasty with a hint of chocolate (very smooth aroma). Flavor is roasty and chocolatey with milt malt hints in the aftertaste. A small touch of alcohol in the flavor as well, but it completes the roastiness perfectly. Very thick and rich on the palate. Poured dark reddish brown with a large frothy light brown head that lasted and produced good lacing. Heavy complex malt and hop port aroma. Medium body witha sticky texture. Good well balnced sweet malt and hop flavor with the same port and fruit long finish. Great brew for #1000. MAP (1089), Lakewood, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 10, 2005 So I recently re-tasted the Stoudts Scotch Ale, and it was top notch, so I have high(ish) hopes for this. This pours a wonderful dark red, very dark red, with a nice creamy head resting atop. This has some warehouse-like musk to it, somewhat odd. Other odor comes out as cherry, fig, plum, yeast, and still, a dry chalk powder dryness. The flavor comes through pretty well, to sat the least. It hits home with a strong fruity malt flavors, very up front with them still. This is still quite impressive. Obviously not fresh, but still damn tastey. AlchemistZ (493), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 14, 2005 Mahogony color with ruby highlights with a dark tan, whipped cream head that has a honeycombed structure building underneath it. Intense, strong, rich caramel malt aroma with a noticable dryness. Higher alcohols create a sense of warmth and rounded chacter. Grape skins, plums, and kitchen spices. Very winey palate from high alcohol content. Plums, prunes and dark fruit are kick-started at mid palate then blow up throughout the finish. Much more bitter than most doppelbocks. Some molasses almost pancake syrup. This is a big beer but not overwhelming. Much more drinkable than most doppels and without losing overall chacter and respect. Port wine of the beer world.
