It had good effervescence and body. Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA

This brew pours with a deep reddish-brown body topped by a thick head with lots of lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and caramelly with a slight hop note and a nice maltiness. The flavor is very similar with a slight candy sugar note. Light to medium bodied and watery. DaSilky1 (1989), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 4, 2004 Huge head on reddish brown...aged malt and spicy but a thin palate...the aroma was nice though as it had that aged, dark complexity of a mature beer. Great carbonation that keeps a consistent foam sheen on the surface. Rich aroma with raisins, plums, prunes, (lots of dark fruit) roasted grains, a touch of alcohol and a bit of carmalized sugar. Color is a murky dark mahagony brown. Great flavor. Very fizzy at first. Loads of roasted grains that linger through the aftertaste. Some coffee. Slightly bitter and dry at the finish. Very clean palate also yet has a very long finish that stays around for a while. A very good Dunkel/Bock and one to try if you can find it. aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 4, 2004 Pours a very dark mahagony that verges on black. The tan head builds easily and fades slow enough to get noticed. The aroma is like charcoal and chocolate. Very porter like. The coal/roasty character carries into the flavor and that part lingers into the finish while the overcooked chocolate cake thickens up the middle. Good carbonation and a nice dark lager that isn’t far from a porter except for the whole yeast issue. obxdude10 (1559), Pottstown, Pennsylvania, USA

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 14, 2004 I thought I’d have to trade for this, but I found it in Half Time. Pours dark turbid brown with a big, creamy, light tan head. Aroma of malt, slight hopcit, dark fruit, brown sugar, toffee, caramel, nutmeg, cognac. Very cmplex, intense aroma. Tastes very malty, with bursts of dark fruit, toffee, caramel, pears, apples, and cognac. Again, a very complex taste, as with all Stoudt’s beers. Finishes malty, fruity, sweet, complex, and very well balanced. As it warmed, more flavors, aromas, and complexity stand out. For my money, this one is part Belgian dubbel, part belgian strong ale, and part Double Bastard....If it is a dunkel, then is a dunkel that takes the same steroids as Barry Bonds. This one was better than Westy 12, and I’ll stand behind that statement to my grave.
