Not quite a doppelbock in strength, but close. Malty sweet with a nice bitterness, with a warming sweet aftertaste. It comes bottle-conditioned in big 765mL bottles. This beer is so drinkable that I quaffed an entire one of these bottles within 20 minutes without any effort whatsoever. Seek out this beer! Volgon (2489), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

Better than Prima Pils only because it is impressive that a US brewer can make a good malty beer. Deep chalkly ruby with a large thinly slowing off-white head. Raisony bready caramel aroma, full and smooth like no beer that I have had. Starts and ends slightly sweet. Wow. Most underated beer on the site. Prostman (1077), Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 12, 2003 This was an outstanding double bock. The date said it was bottled on 2-4-03 and what a beer it was. Deep clear brown with a nice tannish white head. The malty flavor was perfect and hit the spot well for me. Schroppfy (1813), Ohio, USA

Quality is written all over this. Warms to perfect balance. Bottle-conditioned lagers RULE! Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 21, 2003 Very nice black color, small foamy tan head that lasted for a decent amount of time and left a slight lace.Malty sweet aroma, with a dried fruit scent coming through.Oh yah very nice flavor,Malty and chocolate with a light fruit accent and hops. The flavor lasts ans lasts, the malt in this one is fantastic and well balanced with the other flavors.Just a bit more carbonation then i would like but it doesn't detract from the rating numbers i'm going to give it.The alcohol manages to stay fairly well hidden with just a few peeks out from behind the corner to let you know it's there. The brew is remarkebly smooth and very drinkable. The after taste is malty and hoppy with a nice light chocolate.I wish i had a few more of these, but atleast i should Thank PsychProf for letting me try this great brew. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 13, 2004 2003 bottle thanks to JCW!! Pours with an absolutely incredible amount of foamy beige head which is very long lasting. Medium-dark olive brown color with some orange hues and an almost purple tone to it. Murky and bottle conditioned. Aroma has a ton of unmalted roasted barley in it which provides a huge dose of vinousness and rich barley flavor. Notes of plums, figs and grapes. Flavor. Wow, this is a day-after beer if I’ve ever had one. What I mean is that it becomes a much better beer after it has been opened and allowed to sit out overnight, at least in my experience. Right when opened, it is so highly carbonated that the carbonation disrupts the body and does not allow the oily, rich, cohesive body to be appreciated. After it has mellowed, however, this beer is divine. Copious amounts of barley give it a very vinous flavor; tons of rich barley notes, concord grapes and bocky wininess. Starts out with a dry, earthy, dusty yeastiness and progresses in to the rich roasted barley body, which is lightly sweet and has a dose of bitter noble hops. The hops impart flavor moreso than bitterness, but the beer is not overly sweet to begin with so it needs little balancing bitterness. Transitions in to a smooth dark chocolate flavor and finally finishes with a strong dose of bocky wininess. Caramel malt lingers lightly in the background throughout. Fantastic dunkel, and I’m very appreciative of John for sending this. I will certainly be buying this when it comes out next Spring. TAR (2093), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 29, 2003 Updated: Jun 5, 2003Illegible vintage date. Gorgeous hazy purple liquid. Sticky light caramel foam. Thick chocolate pudding layer atop a smoked malt base. Soft hints of perfume, earth, marshmallow, wood, toffee, coffee, and date. Medium body. Gentle carbonation. A fair amount of acidity up front, followed by smoke, prunes, cola, and caramel. Leaving traces of burnt toffee and lightly bitter chocolate in its wake. Finishes with a chocolate covered prune/lightly phenolic hop mixture. It's got the rich chocolate, full bready, smoked malt abundance, and delicate touch of noble hops. This is already a stunning bock, but would be flawless if it weren't for its unpleasant metallic and acidic tendencies.
