Commercial Description:
A rich, deep golden-blonde lager, Stoudt's version of the German classic style includes a generous amount of honey for added flavor notes. The full-bodied Mai-bock beer is significantly stronger than Stoudt's Gold Lager. Brewed with the finest German 2-row malt and a subtle, yet noticeable touch of noble hops, this year-round beer was traditionally made to cut through the chill of early spring.

12 oz bottle. Bright orange, smallish dimishing head. Surprising hoppiness in the aroma at first, but big tough maltiness shows up quickly. Sweet, rather sugary in fact in the flavor, light herbs and wood towards the end. Not up there with Stoudts’ best, but quite nice.

Pours a dark clear amber with a thin off-white head that didn’t last. Mildly sweet and malty aroma, with hotes of honey and earth. Bread crust, yeast, honey, caramel, and some spice. Mild bitter finish. Reminds me of a GOOD version of Yuengling Lager. For the style it’s a not bad.

Pours fiery copper with a thin off-white head. Biscuity, hoppy (grass, earth) aroma. Very sweet body with definite honey flavors, also biscuit, light fruit, and a hint of caramel. Earthy hops balance the sweet malt and honey. Slightly bitter aftertaste. The honey flavor works well in this tasty lager.

Ruby golden color, no head. Smells like a lager, plus honey, red apple. Wow is this sweet, strong flavor and mouthfeel of honey; I'm thinking honey goes better with ales than lagers, especially a bock. Alcohol flavor is up in the mix too, slight burn in the finish to match the honey dripping down my throat. Tastes like a decent lager underneath, too much honey.

12oz Bottle. 04.19.04. Pour is darkly golden, big head quickly fades leaving no trace, no lace. After a couple minutes the beer looks totally flat. Aroma is malty, doughy, salty(?). Smells a bit like a soft pretzel, actually. The flavor is mostly an assault of malt. There are hints of something vegetal, and again I note salt. Very slight bitterness on the finish seems out of place, although it sounds like it is true to the style. Some lingering honey and earth/grass in the aftertaste. An unusual style, not one that I'm in love with.
