Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Double IPA is a strong, full-bodied ale with an intense hop character and deep golden color. This unusual brew is characteristic of the newly recognized style of extremely hoppy and malty ales of American origin. The Double IPA is our strongest beer with an alcohol of over 10% abv and bitterness of more than 75 IBU's. Multiple kettle hop additions and generous dry hopping contribute to the powerful yet smooth and fragrant hop character of this beer. 10% abv.

Fruity smell.. passion fruit, figs, pears mixed with hops. Red and brown in colour with minimal head. Sweet flavour, weak and a littlw watery in consistency. Strong hoppy taste. Bitter after taste, kind of like a sweet cactus.

On tap. Something strange happened here: I smelled a hoppy IPA and this sweet candy juice crap came out. Never have I experienced a disconnect between aroma and flaves like this before, but it was jolting. Very present fresh hops, but sickly berry-like sweetness right off the top. Bad batch maybe?

Bottle. Sweet grapefruit and citrus nose with a strong peach overtone. Lightly floral. Golden pour with a creamy tan head. Loads of sweet, tangy hops in the taste, but not overly bitter. This is more like biting into an oily, juicy fruit. Some bittersweet hops on the exit, but the fruitiness is really what lingers. Gently warming. Caramel and peaches from start to finish, fullish body with a creamy-smooth mf. Nice to have an IPA that isn’t sickeningly over-bittered. A very good one from a (so far) hit-or-miss brewer.

What?! 10.6%?!?

On tap @ Brew Kettle: Clear copper color with an off white head. Aroma of citrusy hops, and some caramel and pale malts. Flavor, caramel up front, some citric notes on the finish, the bitterness just wasn’t really there for me though.

Bottle: VERY HOPPY. One of the hoppiest beers I’ve ever had. First taste is bitter, but this beer is a good one. Sticky like feeling left in mouth. Enjoyed.

Bottle conditioned. Aroma of pine and citrus. Mostly pine. Hazy apricot color with a white head that didn’t stay long. Firm mouthfeel that breaks down quickly. Starts fairly balanced, but the malt quickly and sweetly dominates. After awhile the sugars go, and there is a nice hoppy bitterness. Hard to believe it’s 75 IBUs; malt gets in the way. Very good drink. No reason it should be like the other DIPAs, and it isn’t. Should be interesting to age one for a few years.

Tap Gingerman NYC, and 12 oz bottles in GA. Simple IPA with a prominent hops profile, producing dominant hop flavors with little complexity. It’s a bit thin and doesn’t have enough going on for me. But if it’s the only DIPA/IIPA available i will gladly drink it.
