Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Double IPA is a strong, full-bodied ale with an intense hop character and deep golden color. This unusual brew is characteristic of the newly recognized style of extremely hoppy and malty ales of American origin. The Double IPA is our strongest beer with an alcohol of over 10% abv and bitterness of more than 75 IBU's. Multiple kettle hop additions and generous dry hopping contribute to the powerful yet smooth and fragrant hop character of this beer. 10% abv.

Pours a dark orange. The first sip has a lot of bit, very flavorful with citrus tones.

Bottle from Total Wine, shows a brew date of 7/5/06. Pours a copper like color with a minimal white head. Light aroma of citrus and hops. Has a nice sweetness to it with hops, but does not display the devastating alcohol content. Also, this finishes nice without a massive bite from the alcohol, just a slight tinge. This will get ya drunk!

A thick beer that lacks any other feature. Aroma and flavor are small, a minor burn for alcohol in aroma. A big body , some creaminess. Big body but lacks any other features.

Golden color, not much head to speak of. Deep nose of both citrus and herbal hops primarily. In the mouth, a combination of sweet, heavy stickiness (from alcohol more than from malt) with a powerful but not overpowering hop presence. Interesting marriage of barleywine-ish alcohol with a big and attractive hop profile. But not smooth enough to warrant coming back to.

Bottle. Pours a hazy deep golden color with a nice white head on top. Aroma is hops, with grapefruit, pineapple, orange, and citrus coming through. Hints of sweet malts come into the background. Flavor is quite hoppy with grapefruit and pineapple taking first taste. The hoppy flavor is accompanied by sweet cake malts to balance out. Alcohol is very well hidden for sitting at 10.6%. An enjoyable IIPA.

I was really looking forward to this beer, but I came away a bit dissapointed. I am a sucker for IPAs and hops, but I thought this beer was way too unbalanced to be enjoyable. Maybe I was on an off night or something, but this didnt work with me.

Stoudt’s Double IPA 12 oz bottle Medium pour in a mug Recent brewing, ingested 12/06 Poured a hazy orange amber with a rocky off white fully lasting head with excellent lacing that left layered ring of lacing upon every sip, like reading the rings of on a tree and tracing it’s age. Smelt of strong sweet grapefruit and orange, tropical pineapple banana bubble gum or starbust mystery flavor, parsnip, with light barnyard and earthy yeasty flavors. Taste was upfront strong bittersweet sweet pineapple and citrus cake followed by a harsh and bitter conifer taste with moderate sweet sweet bread on a long hops finish. Palate was medium to full bodied, creamy with a dry finish, also lightly syrupy, softly carbonated, a nice slight alcoholic warmth and moderate to heavy hops astringency. Overall, a great DIPA that balances a malt sweetness backbone and strong hops nicely.
