First sip comes through as lightly bitter, malty and almost overly sweet. But this fades to a lasting piney earthy finish that lingers on your tongue for a while. bb (2941), Martinez, California, USA

Grapefruit and pine aroma, but not as strong as most IIPAs. Resiny, caramel flavor with good balance. Finished with grapefruit and resin. Fuller bodied. Not overly hopped, but still good. Seems to oxidize quickly. milewide (622), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

Bit on sweet side. Good body. MacDaddyOJake (274), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 19, 2006 Aroma is all hops. Taste is heavy, with ample malt and hops.... they must have just crammed them in this beer. Long hoppy finish that was a little bitter, but tasted pretty good. I never would have guessed 10.6% alcohol. The alcohol was well masked and after I finished, it certainly didn’t feel like I had just drank a beer with 10.6% alcohol. Not bad, but it seems like a forced attempt at a new kind of beer. jblendy (518), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 19, 2006 Pours cloudy dark orange with a thick creamy beige/orangy head. Some slight lacing. Aroma at first is mostly sweet caramel malt but reveals some nice hops later on (in a half empty mixer). Flavor is fairly balanced, a little heavy on the caramel maltyness for me, but has some nice citrusy (mostly lemon)/piny hops on the finish. Leaves lemony hops on the palate with a bit of the caramel malt. Overall, very good for the style, just a little too malty for me. ehhdayton (1115), USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 15, 2006 Pours a deep copperish golden with and off white head and an aroma of pine, citrus, and caramel sweetness. The flavor is initially caramel sweet but quickly gives way to a more hoppish note of citrus. Well balanced and a nice smooth finish. 99beerman (27), Gardners, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 13, 2006 Deep copper with a cream colored head. Malty with a sweet pine resin note. Big and sweet on the palate with the weight of a Barley Wine. Slightly citrus and hoppy on the edges as it finishes with a note of clove and cardamom. Very big and hoppy (10% abv), but extremely well balanced for a style that often tends towards the extreme. The perfect marriage of malt, hops and alcohol.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 13, 2006 Being that the hop-bomb American IPA is my all-time favorite beer to seek out and consume, this one certainly caught me off guard. However, although it is a "sweet malt-bomb", it was very enjoyable. Just a very malt laden rendition of the style. Pours a bright amber-orange color with a thin off-white head. No lacing noted. Predominantly sweet Sugar Daddy caramel aromas fill the nose on first sniff, followed by notes of ripe apple, pear, pine and citrus. Mouthfeel is big, full and chewy with a laid back carbonation. Insulin overload flavors of sweet caramel candy (like sucking on a Sugar Daddy-do they still make those?) and Grape-Nut cereal, with a touch of citrus, spice and pine resin cutting through in the finish. Not that the hops aren’t to be found, they just take a bit of a back seat on this one. The 10% alcohol does a nice job of holding it all together and cutting down any cloyishness. Gotta give ’em credit for shakin’ it up a bit and tryin’ somethin’ a bit new and different for an IPA.
