The aroma was a slightly sweet fruity scent. The taste seemed pretty bitter to me. The beer slides down pretty smooth and leaves a short lived, bitter aftertaste. I didn’t find the IPA that appealling. When the alcohol get over 8% the texture of the ale changes. The body changes and the beer loses some of the attraction for me. This was purchased at the Capital Ale House in Richmond. The second Double IPA was purchased at The Caboose in Ashland, VA. and was consumed on 8/21/06 to a much favorable aclaim. The color was an inviting deep gold with a modest head and some lacing. The alochol was detected but not as strong as before. I have changed my evaluation. My third was even better. I upgraded my score. My fourth was excellent. The higher alcohol was not noticed. The full bodied ale was far better than the first one. bdjames29 (272), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Nice looking - burnt, glassy, orange color with an average head. Not a ton of aroma - what there was was sweet fruit. Taste folllowed. Nice bitter, hoppy finish. I don’t know that this was actually an imperial. Just a good, solid IPA. Nothing tremendous. JB175 (1664), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA

Available at several local bars and in cases at local distributors (at a great price for a good Double/Imperial IPA). bubbleflubber (898), Collinsville, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Jul 9, 2006 Fresh from the brewer, this pours an orange caramel into the glass with a little head and lace. The nose is of pine, grapefruit and candy fruit jelly slices. The jellies transfer into the flavor, with orange hues predominating over pine, toffee, heavy grapefruit, sweetened limes and caramel malts. Honestly, for a beer, it’s a GREAT, and I do mean GREAT brew, but it doesn’t quite remind me of a IIPA/Imperial. It’s a bit candied sweet, instead of the typical added malty sweetness, and the finish isn’t nearly as heavy as I would’ve expected. I’m perplexed, as I’m torn between my joy of the brew and the slight style imperfection. I think I’ll go with my joy! Very good brew, and very glad I got several of these to go directly from Stoudt’s. TonyBanannas (36), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma of hops and a dab of citrus. Tastes very floral and not overly hoppy. Dont get me wrong, I love hops, but sometimes I’m in the mood for something with less then say DreadNaught. A good brew, something I would buy again. moejuck (1172), Ohio, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 3, 2006 After sampling Stoudts IPA, I was very dissapointed with this double. The pour was a murky golden color, with plenty of large sediment particles floating around. The head was off-white and had very good retention and tons of lacing. The aroma here was rather bland, and underwhelming--and the taste followed that to a tee. The Stoudts IPA has more kick than the double--which makes no sense. I was expecting a hop monster, and all I got was a touch of hops and a bland tasting beer. If you are going to call your beer a double, then you better give me twice the hop power damn’t! Nose is brandied peaches and sweet orange, somewhat resinous. More maltiness than others of the style. Malty caramel flavors, more citrus (bitter orange). Piney resin behind the other flavors. Finish is a bit hot; might be interesting to lay a few down.
