Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Double IPA is a strong, full-bodied ale with an intense hop character and deep golden color. This unusual brew is characteristic of the newly recognized style of extremely hoppy and malty ales of American origin. The Double IPA is our strongest beer with an alcohol of over 10% abv and bitterness of more than 75 IBU's. Multiple kettle hop additions and generous dry hopping contribute to the powerful yet smooth and fragrant hop character of this beer. 10% abv.

Bottle aged 9 months. What bothered me most was that this beer did not have the fullness to it nor the flavor to it as I had hoped. It tasted Ok when the bottle was poured but defenitaley warmed up my tastes as the bottle ran low and the ale warmed up. Too much malt in my taste for an IIPA. Not bad but maybe not worth the price of more than one beer. Update: Draft. Taste is of a cherry lollipop with malt and hops. Still did not taste as well as others give it. A disappointment.

The aroma has plenty of pine and citrus like hops along with sweet malt. The appearance is amber with a medium head. The flavor is bitter-sweet with tastes of grapefruit and turpentine accented by caramel malt and paper. The palate is not bad. Overall it has some nice qualities but not my favorite Double IPA. One other thing that should be mentioned is that this beer improves as it warms.

Golden orange color out of the bottle with a thin, egg shell head. Subdued nose of citrus hops that turned to Aquanet hairspray as it warmed. Lots of sugary sweetness to this double IPA with hints of orange and pineapple. I expect more of a hop presence from a big IPA, and this just doesn’t have it.

12oz bottled on 3/22/06. Pours a hazy red orange with a moderate off-white head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, resin, and caramel malts. I don’t mean to piss all over this, but it seems like all IIPAs smell the same, just different degrees of goodness. Lotsa grapefruit in this one. Sweet caramel and grapefruit pine, I think the balance is tipped more toward bitterness after 1/4 way through the swallow. I’m burping up pine cones. Very little alcohol burn. Full bodied and creamy. 4.1 previously, now, 3.8 was 8-4-8-4-17 now7-4-8-4-15 (aroma and flavor are 7.5)

A pretty standard double IPA. Lots of the citrus hops. A good amount of malty sweetness for balance. I wish it was more hoppy though. I want a punch in the face with hops from my IIPA’s. 10.6% abv, you’d never guess. rerate: Man, i think i may have only had this once before and I’ve lived in PA for over a year now. Anyways, this smells good. real good. Huge grapefruit aroma. seems promising. Flavor is good and grapefruity too. WHOA, this thing finishes with a punch of alcohol. pretty unappealing. could be that it doesn’t pair well with chex mix.

Poured a clear light peach color with a thick rocky dense head. Aroma is quite pungent and enticing. Honey, orange, peach, And definately hops. Flavor packs just as much of a puch. It starts out like the aroma would suggest then blends into candied apricot and hop the is perfectly balanced. There is just enough bitterness to hold back the sweetness but not enough to overpower it. The use of hops were definately aimed more for flavor and aroma than for bitterness, which is how I prefer my IPAs. This is tied with Alpine Brewing’s beers as my favorite strong IPAs.

Bottle shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a cloudy, very bubbly, golden-orange with a large lasting fluffy white head. Big aroma of fresh citrus hops with some malt to balance it out -- very nice! Flavour is equally hoppy and malty with just a hint of the 10.6% alcohol and a nice bitter finish. Nice medium to full body. It probably suffered slightly due to following the Pizza Port Special Pale which knocked my socks off but this is still a damn fine IIPA.
