Commercial Description:
This unique ale merges the smooth and complex richness of an Oatmeal Stout with the assertive hoppiness of Imperial Stout. Fat Dog has an inviting silky-black color, a prominent roasted malt character, and a chocolatey, coffee-like finish.

Interesting aroma of roasted oats, yeast, walnut, and pencil shavings. Black pour, thick tan head, good lacing. The flavor is roasted oat and grass, with tasteful soy sauce and molasses notes. Neat pencil shaving and peanut finish. Medium body, with the silky texture I love in oatmeal stouts. Great personality and balance. Excellent way of energizing the style.

6-pack take home from the brewery...bottle pours black, tan head dissipates pretty quick...aroma was pretty mild actually (maybe it’s too chilled) but some evidence of coffee, chocolate…flavor is all there though, of toasted malts, coffee bean, vanilla…smooth mouth feel but the aftertaste was rather dry…better on tap but still very good.

Pours red brown, black in the glass with a smallish tan head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is pleasant but not terribly strong, roasted malt, and smooth chocolate with a bit of fruit and bitterness. Roasted coffee and chocolate in the taste with some fruitiness. Definitely a smooth though relatively thin palate with carbonated tingle. Relatively dry, with some hoppiness. The flavor could be a bit more assertive, but it does nicely as a relatively straightforward, smooth drinking stout.

12/21/05 *like it ok do buy* aroma: whiskey whiskey whiskey, almost just like some old irish whiskey i had at a freinds wedding.. odd .. ssome mollassis. app: black stout but thin lookin.. thin and black.. flavor: creamy cocoa smooth nice. a lil sour in the finish. it has lost a lot of its richness it is a bit flat . its good not great. it has an odd dry oatmeal grain blandeness to it. i think this vintage is past its prime. palate: fine to much carbonation, OA: this bottle is a bit over aged. I do have to say this beer is the most inconsistant beer that i like to purchase off and on on a regular basis. from bottle to bottle, some oxidized some rich and right some YUM! some eh. but a good stout all n all.

12 oz. 2006 bottle. Pours hazy dark brown with lighter highlights and lots of small floaters. Minimal, short-lived head leaves nice lacing. Aroma is dominated by dark chocolate with notes of licorice, roasted coffee, and sweet figs. Roasty flavor is dry throughout but not bitter; balanced, smooth. Medium-full bodied, with moderate, fine carbonation and a smooth palate; yes, the oatmeal helps here. No alcohol, quite drinkable, very enjoyable.

12oz Bottle: Pours a very dark shade of brown w/ a small light brown head. Aroma is of chocolate, heavy roasted malts & a tiny whiff of alcohol. First taste = Wow! Smooth, creamy, full-bodied palate. Chocolate, burnt roasted malts, a hint of dark fruit & a slight hint of alcohol. Some bitterness asserts itself after the initial blast of creamy choc. & roasted malts. Rather lacking in the hop dept. though. "Assertive hoppiness" it says in the description, me thinks not, but very smooth & enjoyable.

Bottle courtesy of nolankowal. Pours a semi dark black with some light getting through. Minimal light tan head with ok lacing. Nose is chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Palate is cocoa, coffee and a touch of dark fruits. Mild hoppy aftertaste. Light mouth feel for the style. An ok Impy that I would have tried if not for the bonus from John – thanks man!
