Commercial Description:
This unique ale merges the smooth and complex richness of an Oatmeal Stout with the assertive hoppiness of Imperial Stout. Fat Dog has an inviting silky-black color, a prominent roasted malt character, and a chocolatey, coffee-like finish.

The pour is deep dark brown to black, with a big tan-brown foamy head. The araom is is mostly of chocolate, the malt is very sedate. Big robust flavor. Again, the chocolate is front and center, the malts are still mellow, but very pleasent. Finishes very quick for a stout this thick. Good Beer.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with light amber/brown highlights and a thick chocolate brown head that settles to a thin film. Chocolate dominates the aroma and flavor with mild roasts lingering about. ABV is well hidden. Not the most complex impy out there but very enjoyable.

Stoudts Fat Dog 12 oz bottle Bottled 06/06, walked 10/06 Medium pour in an English pint glass Poured black with a mostly diminishing frothy light brown head. Smelt of dark chocolate, light vineous, a faint alcoholic taste. Taste was upfront light sweet dark chocolate and some moderate roasted bitterness, and slight fruity esters, followed by a strong bitter dark coffee finish accompanied by sweet chocalatey tinges that lingers forever in a semi sweet chocolate kind of way. Mouthfeel was medium, oily, lively and moderately astringent. Overall, a well balanced imperial stout that doesnt have awkward uncomfortable peaks, which makes for great drinkability, and offers a wide complexity of flavors.

Pours thick and black with a dark brown and orange head. Aroma has roasted chocolate malt, dark fruit, some vineous qualities and more sweetness than expected. Full body with some semi-sharp carbonation. Starts with a sharp vineous aspect mixed with chocolate and roasted malt. Quite creamy overall. Finish has some spicy woody hops mixed with the qualities listed on the initial taste. Nice imperial stout.

Thanks to biggcb for sending this in a trade. It was pretty good though for an imperial stout I felt that it was a little lacking. With a little more depth or fullness, this would be a 4.

Aroma / Appearance - The pour resulted in a tan colored half-finger head which soon settled into a oily covering. When everything was settled, the body was a deep black, soaking up 99% of all the light. Appearancewise, it was what I expected from something billing itself as an imperial stout. The nose is oatmeal, expresso, , cocoa crisps and some fruity notes I could not pin down.

Flavor / Palate - Coffee, oatmeal, plums, raisins and bananas form an interesting fun mixture of flavors. There is a roasted maltiness underlining it which becomes more obvious as it warms up. It was a little hot for my tastes but not overwhelming. A little more aging might help it mellow out. This was very solid and enjoyable stout. Though it does not stand out from other imperial stouts it is still worth trying.

Body is opaque with not much a mocha head there. Aroma is coffee, high content cocoa chocolate along with oatmeal along with some butterscotch. Taste is a bit mettalic with light choclate, and a decent coffee content, along with light caramel, kind of an interesting beer. Mouthfeel is as it should be.
