| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 12, 2003 Nice cholocate and coffe flavors. A litte thiner than other stouts I have had. Needed a bit more head. humulus (338), Salem, Missouri, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 11, 2003 Nothing to see here folks, just keep going about your business. Not that this brew is bad, but it is very "run of the mill". A bit weak on palate and the aroma is approaching bland. One thing I did enjoy is how the oat flavor came through and blended with an almost unfermented maltyness. Silphium (2137), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 11, 2003 Why does this remind me of their Anniversary lager? Anyway, has a dark red/brown body, with a thin tan head. Aroma of cereal grains and roasted malt. Flavor is dominated by semi-sweet roasted malts and cereals. Finishes dry like their Dunkel. A hefty price to pay for an average stout. JonR888710 (999), Cochabamba, Bolivia
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 5, 2003 Smells of roasted coffee, chocolate and a remote sourness. The appearance is pitch black with a very thin, beige head. Has a medium body taste with lots of bitter chocolate, sour milk, and coffee. Beer is not oatmealy sweet nor fruity. Roasted flavors dominate, then fade into a bitter aftertaste of coffee and creamy chocolate. I can't say this is an intriguing brew; the smell diagnoses the taste and aftertaste precisely. Overall, a noble representation of the style. Had this with my good friend jgb9348 from a 765 mL bottle purchased at Total Wine in McLean, Virginia.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 4, 2003 Black in colour, opaque with a thin (1 centimetre) brown head. Smells of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate dominate the aroma. The taste is medium-bodied, with a bunch of 'dark' characteristics: chocolate, roasted malt and coffee all come out. Dry palate, the bitterness from the coffee and roasy flavours stays in the palate for a while. An above average stout that should be tasted if available! This is not an imperial stout, but rather a dry stout and should be reclassified as soon as possible to avoid confusion. I had half of a 765 mL bottle purchased by fellow Ratebeerian JonR888710 at Total Wine in McLean, Virginia. maltdog (517), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 1, 2003 Bottling date 9/20/02. Deepest inky brown, almost black. Light brown head is noisy with happily clicking bubbles. Aromas of roasted barley, espresso, charred wood, and a tangy, almost metallic, fruity aroma (cidery?), like pears that have fallen off the tree and started to ferment. Flavor is predominantly espresso with fruity acidic notes. Reminds me of some Ethiopian coffees. The tangy fruity qualities increase as the beer warms, blending favorably with the coffee character. I couldn't detect any chocolate or hop flavors. Medium-bodied with a clean and dry, roasty/charcoal/chalky finish. SJP (483), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 19, 2003 Not too bad, but pretty thin for an imperial stout. A good roasty, coffeeish taste, and a nice tan head. And yeah, I'll agree that this would be better as a dry stout. NJBeerman013 (782), Trenton, New Jersey, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 9, 2003 Updated: Mar 7, 2005This beer is pretty light for an imperial stout. Very good flavor however. There is a bit of roasted coffee and chocolate in this one. Opaque color, with a fizzy tan head. I have to agree with the others here in saying would be a better dry stout then an imperial. 3-5-05 Had another bottle that has been "laying down" on my wine rack in the basement for almost 2 years. The ageing has done wonders for this beer. Much smoother, a little sweeter. Much more enjoyable. Numbers reflect a rerate.
