Commercial Description:
The darkest of the beers we make, this imperial-style stout has a full body, a rich hearty dark-chocolate taste and a coffee-like finish. Its surprisingly smooth drinkability is enhanced by the careful blending of the finest English Kent Golding and Fuggle hops.

Very dark brown. Aroma shows oats, raisins, prunes, some burnt toffee notes. Light espresso and toast palate. Slightly sweet, slightly vinous. Interestingly unroasty (oatmeal porter?). Well-made, distinctive.

On tap at Stoudts Brewery. Poured a dark black with a very small head. Aromoas and tastes of chocolate and coffee. Bitter finish. Decent stoudt.

Pours tar black with a large, lasting khaki head. No lacing. When held up to a bright halogen bulb, the slightly hazy ruby hue creeps into the picture. The aroma is unique for a stout as most of Stoudts beers are unique in some way. This black brew smells of chocolate buttermilk and weak coffee. Toasted pistachios enter the picture, then notes of vanilla and then blueish green, well-used port-a-potty deodorant liquid seeps into the nose. Reminds me of a piss break in the parking lot at a WVU Mountaineer Football tailgate. I'm sure folks from Lincoln, Happy Valley, Anne Arbor and any construction site know this aroma well. Call me crazy, but the aroma brings back good memories of Fall weekends in Morgantown, WV. The flavor is a bit thin, but has its moments. Vanilla, milk chocolate and weak coffee up front. Lightly bitter and moderately citrusy hops on the backside. Just a touch too thin. Full-bodied with lively carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Lengthy, bitter, astringent, dry finish. The acohol isn't extremely high, but is completely hidden througout. Reminds me of Fish Tale Poseiden, but doesn't quite match it. Still, a world class brew that must be tried. Underrated!

Bottle shared by kp, best by 2/27/99: Nearly opaque dark brown pour has a thin ring of tan head. Sweet, mild dark fruit and oatmeal aroma has nice subtle aged complexity. Body starts with a semi-sweet milk chocolate flavor and lots of dark fruit complexity. Seems to have aged very nicely. Probably not too "imperial" but enjoyable nonetheless. I’m really surprised this has lasted so long.
