Commercial Description:
Our version of the English classic; Stoudt's India Pale Ale has a rich amber color, a complex malty flavor, and an assertive hop character. This special ale is bottle conditioned and should continue to develop in character as it matures.

Mahogany with a creamy, off white head and spotty lace. Nice fruity nose with grapefruit, bitter hops and caramel malts. Bitter and fruity flavors with more caramel malts and some roast. Alcohol and spice. Finishes with a good dose of fresh hops.

Bronze color, light head, light lacing. Nose of strong hops, cold grapefruit. The flavor is nicely hoppy & sweet. Balanced and clean. A good overall IPA.

a big thanks to doclock for sending me this special brew.this ipa poured a murky ruby red with a lovely looking creamy head.the head stuck around for quite sometime and left nice webbing as it slowly died down.my nose was greeted with a crisp, and fresh mixture of pine, citurs, caramel.the appearance and smell were exceptional, lets see how it tastes!wow,i was expecting a bit more hops but honestly its just a wonderful balance of hops/malts.you first get the piney hops, then some citurs, followed by a smooth malt finish.the mouthfell is nice, the flavors are blended and drinkable, and the alcohol is well hidden.overall its a very different, yet exceptonal ipa

750mL bottled 1/7/2004 Striking color immediately noticeable as it is being poured. One of the deepest, brightest and most appealing mixes of burnished copper, fiery orange and brilliant gold that I’ve seen in a beer. Large amounts of beige head that lasts to the end of the beer and creates ample lacing. Huge amount of sediment left over, creating a good amount of haziness in the beer. Aroma continues to impress; a juicy, fruity, light citrus hops flavor is just bursting out of the glass. Not overly dry or bitter, but has sweet orange liqueur notes, candied peaches, ruby red grapefruits and behind all this lurks a perfect amount of rich, classic caramel malt. Flavor, as I know have expected, is fantastic as well. Begins with juicy hops, light orange and grapefruit notes, but flavorful as opposed to just astringent or bitter. Caramel malt is perfectly wedded to the hops, with a light chewiness. Finishes medium-dry with caramel/toffee and light herbal/grass notes. Candied orange notes linger on the palate. Carbonation is perfect, that is to say, it has a light bubbly effect on the palate that keeps the beer lively and deceptively light, though the body is medium-full with no traces of thinning. Sadly, after the beer had warmed and breathed, there were distinct notes of raw alcohol in both the aroma and flavor, which did bother my experience somewhat. Had it not been for that, this might very well have been a 5. And I don’t even like IPAs that much!

2002 vintage shared with Bucknaked 4/30/2005. Aroma is still very hoppy, though the caramel has taken over quite a bit. There are still some dry, lightly bitter tangerine notes. Flavor has gone a quite down the hill, too much oxidation it seems, which I thought it odd, being only 3 years old and in a large bottle. Cardboardy somewhat, dry and chewy yeast presence, with some muddled caramel and sugar flavors. Not much in the way of hops left, though it isnt really BAD aside from the oxidation. 8/5/6/4/15 Above rating is an average of the two.

Great Thanks to DocLock for sending me such a Killer selection of Stoudt’s beers!

Rating # 658
This puppy pours a deep mahogany colored body and one of the most luscious and bountiful heads I’ve seen on a beer is some time… nothing excessive though, but the lacing and creaminess is sensational. The aroma is largely malty, big suggestions of caramel and brown sugar. The flavor brings a delectable softness of warm caramels, molasses, butterscotch, and oatmeal a breakfast memory of oatmeal and brown sugar. The hops shins through in the finish… notes of orange peel, lemon grass.. only lightly citric. This is very much in fashion with the old English IPA’s. There are some great notes of toasted wheat bread and buttermilk pancakes covered in molasses. This is One Hell of a Delicious Beer! It taste like cask conditioned IPA… hops have faded out, lightly buttery, fruity, oaky and dry in the finish! <bt>Love IT! I’m truly looking forward to finding out how the bottle I have had cellared for almost a year will turn out… I bet it’s awesome!
This beer is worthy of mass glorification, IMO!

Thanks to DocLock. Poured a copper color with an off white head. Aromas of grapefruit/citrus and sweet malt. Nice and fruity. Flavor is fruity and sweet. Nice balance between the malt and hops. Body is great. Big for an IPA (just how I like it). Nice hop finish.

Y2K version drank December 2007 at Madness with the Moose. Poured a clear orange copper color with an off-white head. Lightly aged hops with citrus notes. The flavor was of aged malt and some citrus. Medium to sub medium body. This held up very well (7/3/7/3/14)

Bottle - thanks to axilla for the trade. Pours deep bronze-amber color with a creamy off-white head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is quite sweet, rich malts, dried apricots and figs along with some floral and citrus hops in the background. Flavor is also quite sweet and fruity - almost a barleywine character to it - hops are present but subdued. This ale, at just about a year old - appears to be fairly mature, with the age and bottle conditioning mellowing the assertive hop character this claims to have. Body is full and with mild carbonation the mouthfeel is pleasant. Definitely a unique ale and worth trying.

Bottle date: 1/7/04 . Very interesting beer. Pours dark amber, almost ruby with a big off white head. Aroma is malty with grapefruit hops. Malt taste up front (more than other IPAs) followed by pine, citrus hops. Pine taste fades into the after taste. Best balanced IPA in my opinion. Not a "hophead" IPA, but for sure one of the best.
