Not hoppy at all, but I find that in many ESBs too much hoppy isn’t necessarily a good thing, as it usually just upsets their delicate balance instead of adding bang to the gun. The word pleasant comes to mind. Not exciting or Wow!, but would I do it again? Well I don’t know. DandyWolfFloyd (331), Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 25, 2008 1st ESB, and I’m not sure this is consistent, but it’s good. It’s obviously hoppy in aroma, with malt notes as well. It’s appearance is a reddish amber. It’s flavor is very pleasing sweet and nutty, with some malt. It’s not astringent like I’d expected. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 16, 2008 Yeast dominates the aroma with light amounts of malts and even less of hops. Hazy orange color with a small tan head. Mildly sweet beginning with a nutty finish. Goodgrief (1161), Middletown, Delaware, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 10, 2008 July 2007 - Beer pours a chestnut brown color with beauty head and a little lacing. No aroma at all. None. Flavor was bready malty with a touch of caramel sweetness and a slight bitterness. Not a bad ESB...but a tad boring. checkmatei1 (630), Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 6, 2008 Draft: Poured a dark amber color with a nice amount of head. The aroma was that of caramel and roasted malts. The flavor mildly bitter with a bit of hops, sweets, and malts. Very good beer to drink. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 1, 2008 Dark amber, almost brown color with a thick off white head. Smells like wheatgrass. Flavor is dry, mildly bitter, mildly burnt. Well balanced and not bad overall. jake65 (1725), Williston, North Dakota, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 19, 2008 Bottle: Ruddy amber pour with a thick beige head. Aroma is mild with bready and caramel malts. Faint floral hops. Flavor is malty and sweet. A bit earthy with some florals. The malt character gives a feel of an English Pale Ale, but not quite as flavorful. Smooth and an easy drinker. JFGrind (1360), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 9, 2008 I’ve had Scarlet Lady a couple times over the past month on draft. Not sure what to make of it, not overly hopped but not well blended either. Bitterness collides with caramel & earthiness to prevent this ESB from gaining greatness.
