Looks very much like a porter/lighter stout. Great black color, with great head and lacing. Smells chocolaty, with port, walnuts, slight root beer, licorice, and slight earthy aromas. Tastes smooth, creamy, sweet, bold, very malty, with a well hidden alcohol presence (hidden, but present....you don't want to drink too many of these without a driver....its smoothness folls you). Not for lightweights. One of the finest American scotch ales I've had (and as a disclaimer, I havent' had many foreign ones). Great beer. If you like the style, you MUSt try this beer. tbookman (618), Ephrata, Pennsylvania, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Feb 19, 2004 Deep coppery brown w/a short lived beige head. Roasty and malty; caramel gets stronger as it warms, fairly clean and lightly chocolatey w/ hints of DMS. Very well balanced, a little too well for a Scotch. Also a little chocolatey w/ light caramel as it warms, but overall thin on flavor. Medium light m/f w/ a higher amount of carbonation than I expected and a little acidic bite; light warming from alcohol. Not a huge disappointment, but not a great Scotch ale by any stretch of the imagination. Overall very thin on flavor and average at best. Yankovitch333 (612), Chesapeake City, Maryland, USA

Chocolate, coffee, and smokey peat on the tongue. This was a very enjoyable beer. It was great by the fireplace on a cold snowy night. Terminus (1955), Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 31, 2003 Pitch black in colour with a super-dense tan head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, bread, cherries and a bit of nutmeg. Medium-bodied; Bitter coffee start with a mild breadiness and a subtle spiceyness. Aftertaste very clean for a scotch, some coffee and roasted malt, no sugars albeit a light yeastie quality. Overall, good for a scotch and a nice beer all-around. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits in Washington, D.C. on 28-December-2003. haddon90 (1036), Alexandria, Virginia, USA

Some fruit in teh flavor, hop-malt balance. Finishes well. It was good, but not as good as I wanted. hotstuff (3176), Indiana, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 29, 2003 A small sized tan head with fine-medium sized bubbles that mostly diminished. The body was opaque and uncarbonated with a dark brown hue. The nose was malty, some hop notes and smokey. The flavor was fruity, malty and a bit acidic. The mouthfeel was very creamy and smooth. This was a medium-full bodied beer with good lacing.
