Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Scotch-style ale features a deep, burnished-copper color, sweet and very full-bodied palate, and well-defined characteristics of roasted and peat-smoked malt. This beer is brewed from the finest European ingredients and uses one of the few ale yeasts that ferments cool (55°) and is cold-conditioned or lagered for six weeks prior to bottle-conditioning.

Sampled at the RBSG ’07 Grand Tasting. Nice to see another retired brew shared with the guests. From a 750 ml bottle, this pours a near opaque dark brown brew with creamy off-white head. Aroma of rich caramel, vanilla, and some smoked peat. Taste is llightly carbonated, medium bodied with some cotton candy, dry pitted dark fruit and some chocolate malt. Finish is smooth, creamy and a slight acidic aftertaste.

This is an excellent Scotch ale. The aroma has smoke, earth, and malt. Flavor is roasted malt and very earthy as well. This beer is all about the malt and there is no hop presence. Just a touch of sugar. It could be a little thick, but quite exceptional as it is.

RBSG 2007: 2001 Bottle: Poured an inky dark brown, no head. Aroma, peaty malts, molasses. Flavor, chocolate, sherry, some sweet malts. Definitely past it’s prime, but it held up pretty well.

750 mL bottle sampled at RBSG 2007. Pours to a dark cola colored body with a thin foamy tan head. The aroma is caramel and cola with some dark fruits. The flavor is sweet powdered sugar and nutty cola mixed with caramelized malt. The palate is tart and sweet and medium bodied. Really sweet.

750 ml bottled 9/30/2003. Consumed January 26th, 2007.
Pours a very dark brown with a nice head of soft film. Aroma is rich smoked peat. Flavor is smooth and well blended. Just a a touch of tang form the smoke. An elegant and refined scotch.

25.87 oz bottle. Vintage date 3-18-04? ... a bit smudged. Dark choco-brown with a thin tan film. Chocolate, molasses, tobacco and peat. Similar in taste. A little oily, but the smokiness is beautifully mellowed. This has knitted together very well over time. Not too sweet or too sharp. A scotch ale without the thistles. Nice.

Big props to smokeykhan for bringing this to my tasting! 2002 vintage. Dark brown with an off white head. Caramel and spice nose, sweet malt. The flavor is sweet malt, with tinges of whiskey and smoke. Absolutely delicious! One of my favorites among the many great beers we had!
