Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Scotch-style ale features a deep, burnished-copper color, sweet and very full-bodied palate, and well-defined characteristics of roasted and peat-smoked malt. This beer is brewed from the finest European ingredients and uses one of the few ale yeasts that ferments cool (55°) and is cold-conditioned or lagered for six weeks prior to bottle-conditioning.

750 ml bottle from 2004. Pours a darker brown with a ruby red when held to the light. Foamy light tan head that sustained and laced. Aroma of molasses, caramel, sweet malts and candy. Flavors of the same, hard to put into words but this thing aged gracefully. Malty, roasty, sweet with some light smoke. Hands down the best Scotch Ale I have had to date. Glad I have two more of these in my cellar.

Tasting at Immy’s. From 750. Poured a deep brown with off white rim. BIG caramel nose on this, with more hefty caramel in the flavor and some roasted malts. Came off very well done.

Dark brown with diminishing head. A Creamy, roasted, spicy, vanilla aroma and flavor. Gave the appearance of heavy, but was very thin, and light bodied. Not filling. Enjoyed this at Immy’s Tasting.

Vintage date 9/30/03. Pours very dark red-brown--as close to black as you can get--with a one-finger tan head. Malty, smoky, suprisingly vinous aroma with hints of fig, chocolate, and almonds. The flavor is not as complex as the aroma, but delivers the best of a Scotch Ale. A fairly basic malt domination gives way in the middle to lactose and in the end to a very pleasant smokiness. A bit of oxidation is apparent near the end, but it doesn’t get in the way; it actually adds a bit to the beer’s charm. Very good.

(750ml bottle, 2001 vintage) Pours a deep mahogany body with a moderate tan head. Aroma of malt, dark fruit, and caramel. Flavor of roasted malt, dark fruit, and some cocoa.

Deep burgandy body. Grape and malty aroma is like an alt bier. Malty body with a slightly chalky finish. Vintage flavour sneaks through at the end, almost smoky.

2001: Pour is hazy amber red with thin tan head...smell is sweet and has smoke and hints of mint...taste is a little smokey, but really just sweet and malty...past it’s prime...

Irregular cream head on clear dark brown body. Roasty smoke aroma, some hints of a garbage bin (I don’t mean that in a bad way, just the sense of a mix of things that you get in a garbage bin), and vanilla. Slightly plastic flavor amid a ton of malt. A bit of a vintage-like note. Average body. Not bad at all.
