Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Scotch-style ale features a deep, burnished-copper color, sweet and very full-bodied palate, and well-defined characteristics of roasted and peat-smoked malt. This beer is brewed from the finest European ingredients and uses one of the few ale yeasts that ferments cool (55°) and is cold-conditioned or lagered for six weeks prior to bottle-conditioning.

Bottle. Nose-sweet honey, grape, cola. Taste-wet coffee grounds, flat cola, light hickory smoke, medium malts, bitter on the back end. A thick “too sweet” mouthfeel.

2004 Vintage. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off-white head. Light roasty aroma with a touch of chocolate. Flavor of cola, light roast and a touch of smoke. Semi-dry finish. Held up well.

2003, big thanks to Numenor for this one! Dark brown, little head. Huge aroma of molasses and caramel, very inviting. Clearly malt focused, the molasses and caramel shine through. A hint of chocolate emerges. Fascinating finish, somewhat smoky, definite note of peat. This has aged quite nicely. Sampled at the Richmond "gathering."

2003 Vintage -- Very dark body with minimal head. Extreme amounts of mollasses and caramel in the aroma. Some peet accents with a smokey quality in the ending.

Sampled at the Friday night (Pre-Atlanta Cask Ale tasting) RB gathering at Twains 2006. 750 bottle. Thanks Jay! Pours deep chestnut – black with a light off white head. Sweet cotton candy aroma with some kind of fruit hints. Heavy aroma. Malt flavor with heavy bourboned fruit (like prunes), alcohol, and some kind of root or cola in the finish. Medium heavy body with an oily finish.

’04 750 ml bottle I thought that this one was retired since it came in the 750 bottle and is no longer listed on the Stoudt’s website. Pours dark brown with a thick creamy off-white head. Rich caramel aroma with some vanilla and a hint of smokiness. Creamy full bodied sweet brew that goes long inthe finish with a lightly acidic touch. Classic Scotch Ale.

Stoudt’s Scotch Ale pours to a beautiful, bright, deep garnet color with a thick, creamy tan head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose is so inviting on this beer. Big aromas of sweet and caramel malt marry with subtle aromas of peat smoke, and peppery alcohol. The palate is lush with big malt flavors of sweet malt, caramel malt, a touch of smoke, a touch of roast, and a nice underpinning of toffee flavor. The body is hefty and comforting, as the slick maltiness glides over the tongue. This beer finishes with big sweet and caramel malt flavors up front, then ends slightly smoky and warming. This is an absolutely delicious beer with wonderful malt character. At 7% abv it is a very warming brew, and makes the perfect beer to have on a cold Fall or Winter night. This beer would also work very well as a desert beer. I would pair this with sticky toffee pudding, or perhaps creme brulee. A great beer to sip and savor while next to a cozy and snug fire.
