Got to hand it to Stoudts. They filled this bottle to within 1/4 of an inch from the top to reduce the effects of oxidation over the long haul. Large light tan head of medium sized bubbles. Reduces slowly with very light carbonation. Reforms nicely upon swirling. No sourness to the aroma which is a great start to a 4+ year old brew. Rich aroma with plenty of molasses, raisins and a bit of peaty malts. Color is a very dark reddish brown. Almost to the point of being black. Smooth and creamy in the mouth. Only the slightest hint of oxidative sourness. Rich and malty with more molasses, a hint of smoke and bitterness. A little sweet and the alcohol has a pretty big kick for only being 7%. Oily in the mouth and is a little tart at the finish but leaves a nice malty aftertaste. This is a pretty damn good brew for being 4 years old. Big thanks to EtownEraser for finding this one for me. aobecksy (661), Middle of no where, Ohio, USA

Looked gorgeous, sweet and full bodied--do they make a carmel liquor, because this would make the grade. Creamy and warming, I loved it! In fact I finished the bottle at the labor day gathering.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 5, 2005 Bottle: Courtesy of MAP. Lots of caramel in the aroma and hints of chocolate. Barley wine aromas minus the hops. Pours a real dark brownish-orange with no transparency. Caramel from start to finish with some light banana bread. Banana bread increases in the finish. axilla (962), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 24, 2005 Pours a dark brown, almost black body with a 2 finger thick, rocky brown head. Aroma is fresh from the oven German Chocolate cake. The flavor is chocolate chips, nuts, and sweet smoked peat in the finish. Very easy to drink. Alcohol almost non-existant in flavor and nose. iwantalambic (1389), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 15, 2005 765 mL capped bottle, vintage date – 11/28/04: opaque black with mahogany highlights and a full, dark brown head, that settles into a nice film. Rich malted mocha aroma with roasted plums, charred pine nuts, sweet alcohol, jalapeños, coconut and honey dipped nuts. Moist, malted & roasted nut flavour, salty and even a bit smoky. Smooth, creamy palate even a bit milky in the finish: coating and sweet. A warming alcohol ensues after the smoky, peaty flavours – a beer I have waited a long time to enjoy, I wish I had more opportunities to try the Stoudt offerings, simply wonderful, thanks Santa (Eyedrinkale). raymow (738), Bensalem, Pennsylvania, USA

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Nov 15, 2004 I must say that I am surprised at the high ratings for this brew. Perhaps I got a bad batch. This brew poured a dark, particulate chestnut color. The nose was earthy, even smoky. Smooth and well balanced, but somehow overly sweet, almost syrupy. Given past Stoudts brews I have had, I am willing to give this one another shot.
