The nose is so inviting on this beer. Big aromas of sweet and caramel malt marry with subtle aromas of peat smoke, and peppery alcohol. The palate is lush with big malt flavors of sweet malt, caramel malt, a touch of smoke, a touch of roast, and a nice underpinning of toffee flavor. The body is hefty and comforting, as the slick maltiness glides over the tongue. This beer finishes with big sweet and caramel malt flavors up front, then ends slightly smoky and warming.
This is an absolutely delicious beer with wonderful malt character. At 7% abv it is a very warming brew, and makes the perfect beer to have on a cold Fall or Winter night. This beer would also work very well as a desert beer. I would pair this with sticky toffee pudding, or perhaps creme brulee. A great beer to sip and savor while next to a cozy and snug fire.

Deep muddy brown, just a hint of red. Bubbly, puffy tan head. Nose very peaty, lots of malts, definitely some chocolate. Excellent malty character, very scotchy and earthy. Peat, wood, smoke, and a nice chocolate tone. Bit of bitterness, just light, enough to make the tongue interested. Good creaminess. An excellent scotch ale. jcalbi (378), New Jersey, USA

Brownish-bronze in color very malty with very faintly detectable hop character. Chocolate and molasses flavors on the palate. A very filling ale. argo0 (6907), Washington DC, USA

Looked gorgeous, sweet and full bodied--do they make a carmel liquor, because this would make the grade. Creamy and warming, I loved it! In fact I finished the bottle at the labor day gathering.

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 8, 2001 At first appearing black in the glass, I
found it was actually a beautiful deep garnet red
when held to the light. Good sized light tan head
lasted a fair length. Aroma was definitely smoky.
Flavor was malty sweet and smoky. The bottle-conditioning
endowed it with a smooth creamy carbonation and almost
velvety mouthfeel. Alcohol presence was noticeable and
warming. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA

Easily one of the best Stoudts beers I’ve had and a real shame this is no longer available. Sweet and malty with just the right amount of light smokiness to make it really interesting. The hops sting just right and the spicy nutmeg and cinnamon are there also. Bring it back, damn it!! egajdzis (3626), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA
