Commercial Description:
This Belgian Royal Stout was brewed as a tribute to one of America’s best pubs. Jennifer and Chris Lively who run the place may be proud of Ebenezer’s Pub. Not only do they have 35 beers on draught, most of these are hard to find Supreme Belgian Ales. Above that, they have one of the most extensive bottle-conditioned beer lists through different bottling dates we have ever seen. Not only can you drink almost any Belgian beer, the worlds best brewery’s are represented. A lot of the guests talk about the American Kulminator, yet with that difference that the Belgian inspired food, is simply great. Black Albert was brewed and crafted with a 100% Belgian ingredients. Pours a blacker than black beer with an inch of dark tan head that lingers as it cascades into itself. Nice aroma of bitter-sweet chocolate, fresh torrified coffee beans, barley, candy sugar, complex fruits, and floral hops. At the front, there is spiced baker’s chocolate, fresh mocha, caramel like barley touches, and underlying hints of dried fruits which marries the back of your palate and features a Top, and well integrated but not overbearing hop flavour. The after-taste is well balanced and shows a panorama of extreme sensations like chocolate and coffee bitters, a plum cake richness that covers the palate, and a crisp impression of hop bitters that brings elegance and freshness into this massive brew. Pours black, this beige head. Some suspended sediment. Aroma is very alcoholic with some chocolate and roasted malt. Flavour is yeasty, fruity (apples) some chocolate and lots of alcohol. But it is not over stated or overpowering. The beer is strong and hot. Some spice hidden in the palate as well. Very interesting beer.

Bottle. Pours jet black, with very little head. Nose of red fruit and berries, roast, coffee, chocolate, licorice, mint, a very pronounced Belgain character to the nose as well, slightly sour, a hint of smoke as it warms. A really cool floral/perfume character inches over the opening of the glass. Palate is roasted fruite, plums, berries, ashes, tobacco, raisins, chocolate, a touch of brandyish alcohol, and a bit of sourness. Brilliant!

LOT: A-4-BB. It was expensive to get. €4,29. Only evident when it was exported from Belgium to the States to the Netherlands. It poured a thick dark liquid with a sturdy murky beige brown head. Sensation starts with sour and wringing bitters. Getting used to these a fine palate of bitters and off-sweetness appears. Coffee, chocolate and liquorice on a fruity scent. Alcohol is present but not on the forefront of tastes. Struise Brouwers made a real good English beer without losing their local preferences. And that is what I like.

Bottle: The aroma contains lots of black licorice, chocolate, light alcohol, and slight musty cherry. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a small beige head that leaves behind sporadic lacing. The flavor starts with chocolate and some faint cherry and yeasty notes. There’s a lot of black licorice in the finish along with some faint cherry and piney hops. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a soft mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours with a big off-white/light brown head and an almost impermeable black body. Chocolatey/coffee/dried fruit aromas and taste and quite a bit of alcoholic warmth and also yeast derived esters/secondary alcohols lifting the flavour at the end in a way that belgian trappist yeasts do. Really great.

Bottle poured into a snifter. Pours deep, dark black with thick beige head. Chocolate and coffee aromas. It’s malty, sweet and rich to the taste. This stout is delicious but I would have like a little more on the back end.
