Commercial Description:
This Belgian Royal Stout was brewed as a tribute to one of America’s best pubs. Jennifer and Chris Lively who run the place may be proud of Ebenezer’s Pub. Not only do they have 35 beers on draught, most of these are hard to find Supreme Belgian Ales. Above that, they have one of the most extensive bottle-conditioned beer lists through different bottling dates we have ever seen. Not only can you drink almost any Belgian beer, the worlds best brewery’s are represented. A lot of the guests talk about the American Kulminator, yet with that difference that the Belgian inspired food, is simply great. Black Albert was brewed and crafted with a 100% Belgian ingredients. Pours a blacker than black beer with an inch of dark tan head that lingers as it cascades into itself. Nice aroma of bitter-sweet chocolate, fresh torrified coffee beans, barley, candy sugar, complex fruits, and floral hops. At the front, there is spiced baker’s chocolate, fresh mocha, caramel like barley touches, and underlying hints of dried fruits which marries the back of your palate and features a Top, and well integrated but not overbearing hop flavour. The after-taste is well balanced and shows a panorama of extreme sensations like chocolate and coffee bitters, a plum cake richness that covers the palate, and a crisp impression of hop bitters that brings elegance and freshness into this massive brew. Bottle and served in my Expedition snifter: Jet black with a fading but lasting frothy tan head which left spotty lace upon the glassware. The aroma has notes of anise, fig, prune, chocolate, candi sugar, coffee and cream, Cavendish pipe tobacco and some peat, lovely! The taste is a tour de force of sweet black malts and dark fruits with a kick of coffee and hop bitterness. Well rounded spicy and smoky notes finish off the experience. The mouth feel is lush and oily, a tad warming and boozy. Does get a tad chalky towards the end. Now this is what I want in my Impy’s... big and bold malt assault without becoming cloy. Well done De Struise.

Pours from 11.2 oz bottle pitch black, forming huge light brown head of foam. Aroma of smoky alcohol, roasted malts, hops, coffee and darkened figs. The flavour was bitter chocolate, dark malt, dark coffee, subtle caramel, and finishes with a bitter flavor that may come from the chocolate or possibly hops or both. The palate is dry, medium-full bodied, sweet on the back end. Complex roasted Belgian stout. Makes me think this is Struise Pannepot with tons of black malts. Lovely beer. Bottle compliments of DrBayern (thanks Matt!!)

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a tan head and some lacing. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, dark fruit. Taste is really nice. Lots of roasted alt, plenty of coffee, bitter malt notes, chocolate, and more fruit. Mouth is creamy, finish is also pretty smooth, with a little bitter as well. Overall, a very smooth and really drinkable imperial stout.

11.2 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with BeerExchange. Pours black with a very large brown head that lasted just about to the end and left plenty of lace all the way down the glass. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and plums. The flavor is rich with chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, plums and candi sugar. A soft but long-lasting bitterness arises that is more akin to bitter chocolate than the hoppy grapefruit pith I’ve become accustomed to. The bitterness lingers for about thirty seconds beyond the swallow and then fades almost as it arose. Full bodied with a smooth, silky mouthfeel. No sign of the 13% abv. Very well done and quite enjoyable.

On tap at the Publican, Chicago, January. This was an excellent pairing with the wonderful, peasant styled food of the restaurant. In many ways the beer reminds me more of an old ale than an imperial stout, with dried fruit and spice coming before hops and roasted malts. Sure there’s the coffee, the dark roast coffee, and the rich mouthfeel, but there’s plenty of prune, toffee, anise, and cardamom. Together its another superbly crafted beer from Struise.

Great stroy behind this rating. This thing is on the shelf at my store for $11. Not a chance in hell I’m dropping that on one bottle. Well yesterday my manager was "dusting" the shelf and accidently knocked off. The cap shot off and there was some spillage. Well the guy I work with ran over and picked it up to see how much was left. 1/2 a bottle awesome. Into the cold box it went. We split the left over among the 3 of us. Poured oily black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of licorice, coffee, chocolate, and fruit. Amazingly smooth for 13%. Lots of coffee with some chocolate, candy, and fruit finish. Pretty f’in complex.
