Commercial Description:
This Belgian Royal Stout was brewed as a tribute to one of America’s best pubs. Jennifer and Chris Lively who run the place may be proud of Ebenezer’s Pub. Not only do they have 35 beers on draught, most of these are hard to find Supreme Belgian Ales. Above that, they have one of the most extensive bottle-conditioned beer lists through different bottling dates we have ever seen. Not only can you drink almost any Belgian beer, the worlds best brewery’s are represented. A lot of the guests talk about the American Kulminator, yet with that difference that the Belgian inspired food, is simply great. Black Albert was brewed and crafted with a 100% Belgian ingredients. Pours a blacker than black beer with an inch of dark tan head that lingers as it cascades into itself. Nice aroma of bitter-sweet chocolate, fresh torrified coffee beans, barley, candy sugar, complex fruits, and floral hops. At the front, there is spiced baker’s chocolate, fresh mocha, caramel like barley touches, and underlying hints of dried fruits which marries the back of your palate and features a Top, and well integrated but not overbearing hop flavour. The after-taste is well balanced and shows a panorama of extreme sensations like chocolate and coffee bitters, a plum cake richness that covers the palate, and a crisp impression of hop bitters that brings elegance and freshness into this massive brew. While this is certainly a good beer, I dont see it as being quite a great as many have said. All the usual attributes; very dark bown, sweet, malty etc.etc. But to me nothing really over the top. Personally I prefer Bell’s Expedition Stout.t.

Black pour like molasses but not nearly as dense. Fascinating evolution of the thick brown head. It rises like bread dough with tiny compact bubbles deeper and larger floculent foam near the surface. Initially the aroma is overwhelmingly of baked apples and quince. As things settle rich roast and new leather come forward but I cannot find any chocolate in the aroma. The palate shows a complex interplay between the silky dark malts and funky fruit and subtle yeast. The finish is both bitter and a little musty. It is really surprising that there is no evidence of alcohol in this 13% ABV brew!

Bottle from bleeng at the December Houston tasting. Thanks! Pours pitch black with a beige head. Leaves a clingy brown film on the side of the glass. Aroma is chocolate hairspray, cherry, and vegetable. Flavor is smoky, chalky chocolate herb vegetable with a peppery finish. Coating mouthfeel. Too earthy and vegetable-like.

Very dark brown with tan head. Chocolate, toffee, and brown sugar in the aroma. Some dark roast. The flavor has caramel, chocolate, brown sugar, some coffee, and some molasses. Either the alcohol is ridiculously well-hidden or this one is no where near 13% ABV. Im all for a beer that masks its strength but I also want a super strong stout to be super strong tasting and this one really is not. Still a solid beer.

bottle thanks to bleeng. Shared at December Houston Tasting. Pours black with a brown head. nose is of roast malt and alcohol. Taste was of roasted malt with some coffee and mild chocolate. Not overwhelming, more subtle and smooth. Mouthfeel is medium, not thick and chewy like some impys are. Pretty good but not great, IMO.

330ml Bottle: Complex aroma of chocolate, dark ripe fruit, light currant, slight alcohol, slight roasting, slight smoke, slight must, and slight red wine. Poured pitch black in color with a small, rocky, brown head that lasted throughout. Opaque. Slightly sparkling. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter flavor. Tastes of malts, roasting, light alcohol, wood, tar, tobacco, light smoke, chocolate, light soy sauce, and some coffee. Full body. Thick, viscous texture. Soft carbonation. Smokey, malty, woody, sweet tobacco finish. Slight alcohol burn, but for 13%ABV the alcohol is well hidden.

Houston RB Dec Impy Stout tasting. Bottle. Coal black, small tan head. Nose is sweet, chocolately, just a bit alcoholic. Taste starts off with a bit of carbonation, with hints of coffee, chocolate, pepper, raisins, spices. Chewy, thick and very easy to drink. Alcohol is well hidden. Excellent beer. Too bad about the 10 dollar price though.
