Commercial Description:
This Belgian Royal Stout was brewed as a tribute to one of America’s best pubs. Jennifer and Chris Lively who run the place may be proud of Ebenezer’s Pub. Not only do they have 35 beers on draught, most of these are hard to find Supreme Belgian Ales. Above that, they have one of the most extensive bottle-conditioned beer lists through different bottling dates we have ever seen. Not only can you drink almost any Belgian beer, the worlds best brewery’s are represented. A lot of the guests talk about the American Kulminator, yet with that difference that the Belgian inspired food, is simply great. Black Albert was brewed and crafted with a 100% Belgian ingredients. Pours a blacker than black beer with an inch of dark tan head that lingers as it cascades into itself. Nice aroma of bitter-sweet chocolate, fresh torrified coffee beans, barley, candy sugar, complex fruits, and floral hops. At the front, there is spiced baker’s chocolate, fresh mocha, caramel like barley touches, and underlying hints of dried fruits which marries the back of your palate and features a Top, and well integrated but not overbearing hop flavour. The after-taste is well balanced and shows a panorama of extreme sensations like chocolate and coffee bitters, a plum cake richness that covers the palate, and a crisp impression of hop bitters that brings elegance and freshness into this massive brew. Draught at SBWF ’08: Pours black with a minimal head. Smooth toffee and coffee on the nose. More smooth toffee and coffee in the flavor with some chocolate added. Not much bitterness.

I’ve had this a couple of times. The aroma is really hefty: Loads of sweet alcohol, coffee, fruits and chocolate. The flavour is almost like cough syrup - heavy, sweet, spicy and somehow quite neat. Heaps of coffee and chocolate, some very weird esters and a nice handfull of hops finishes this baby off. I guess it could use a good year in the cellar...

Bottled@EBF 2008. Pitch black, low choco head. Intial aroma of chocolate and coffee followed by notes of berries, herbs and mild spices. Taste is very complex, has a sharp and intense sweetness with lots of rosted dark malts, bitter coffe, licorice and berries. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium to full body. Ends up with a strong bitter-acidic accent.

Sample at J Gumbos Aug 2008 Indy tasting - Aroma is sweet chocolate, coffee and dark fruits. Flavor is also chocolate and coffee with caramel and plum. Just a slight hop back. Palate is very smooth for 13%. This was a big tasting and Albert was one of the last beers poured. My sample size wasn’t very big either. So it’s probably better, but my notes say "good but not great".

Just a beautiful stout, which is not my favorite style of beer to begin with. Deep dark chocolate brown in color with a gorgeous light brown head. Aroma and flavors of chocolate, molasses, smoke, caramel, roasted malts, all superbly blended to create something very special. Wonderful.

Bottle (33cl). Courtesy of Phil L - thank you thank you thank you!!!. Bit of a gusher, but it was about 16 Celsius and had been traveling a lot recently; last rating of my September 2008 England trip. Large light brown frothy lasting head, impenetrable black with ruby highlights. Fruity, vinous, somewhat herbal aroma, not the stomping alcohol/malt beast I was expecting, quite dry and spicy, I get light coffee grounds, black cherry, licorice - mmmmmm. The taste - more tart fruit, still dry - and where’s the 13%? This is STUNNING, more like a very roasty quad than an impy - the chocolate and coffee emerge slowly and seamlessly begin to take over, but it’s all so balanced. The body is only moderate, it’s mostly silky and lightly acidic on the palate, slickly fruit-malty with enough deep roast background bitterness to keep it from being too sweet - screw typing more, I’m going to savour the rest of this now. Yummmm!

Had this sat outside Frank the Camper, Aarhus 16-09-08 and got from Phil L’s ’Beer Merchants/Cave Direct’ Pours black going to dark brown at the edges. This is a very good beer though not quite the world beater I expected. Creamy in mouth, soft citrussy and the alcohol is so well hidden. Some burntness sits on the roof of the mouth and clings there for some time, the tangy citrussness keeps coming back. Loz likes this much more than me and would have given it a 4.2.
