Bit of a gusher, but it was about 16 Celsius and had been traveling a lot recently; last rating of my September 2008 England trip. Large light brown frothy lasting head, impenetrable black with ruby highlights. Fruity, vinous, somewhat herbal aroma, not the stomping alcohol/malt beast I was expecting, quite dry and spicy, I get light coffee grounds, black cherry, licorice - mmmmmm. The taste - more tart fruit, still dry - and where’s the 13%? This is STUNNING, more like a very roasty quad than an impy - the chocolate and coffee emerge slowly and seamlessly begin to take over, but it’s all so balanced. The body is only moderate, it’s mostly silky and lightly acidic on the palate, slickly fruit-malty with enough deep roast background bitterness to keep it from being too sweet - screw typing more, I’m going to savour the rest of this now. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 28, 2008 Had this sat outside Frank the Camper, Aarhus 16-09-08 and got from Phil L’s ’Beer Merchants/Cave Direct’ Pours black going to dark brown at the edges. This is a very good beer though not quite the world beater I expected. Creamy in mouth, soft citrussy and the alcohol is so well hidden. Some burntness sits on the roof of the mouth and clings there for some time, the tangy citrussness keeps coming back. Loz likes this much more than me and would have given it a 4.2. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

Apperance: Black as night with a nice creamy head.
Aroma: Fruit, Cream, Chocolate, Roasted malt.
T: Milk chocolate, Ripe fruit, Licorice, Spices, Brown sugar.
Palate: Supersmooth with a little bite from the alcohol and just enough hops at the end to balance it out.
This is one damn fine belgian-style stout that i’ll gladly try again! vyvvy (2044), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 24, 2008 Pours very dark with a nice sized soapy brown head. The aroma has dark fruits, heavily roasted malt, Belgium yeast, berries, cream and anise. Medium / thick body with a good amount of soft carbonation. The flavor starts with a Belgium twang, anise, lots of sourness, good amount of roasted dark malt with no bitterness from the malt, but there is a spicy bitterness that seems like it is from hops and there is a creaminess to all of it. The finish has lush dark fruits, anise and an odd funk. This is very complex and interesting. A great beer and many thanks to xmarcnolanx for sharing this wonderful thing. xpimptastikx (41), Austin, Texas, USA

Lovely black color with a tan head that never left. Sweet with a rich coco flavoring that marries well with the large amount of hops. doubleo (1104), San Diego, California, USA

Marked Belgian Royal Stout, I heard that makes a difference as to what batch it is. Pours black with a nice, tan head, good retention, good lace. Smells of dark, sweet fruit. Some smoke, roasty malts. Tastes sweet and dark fruity with some toasty as well as sour malt flavors and alcohol. Full body, good carbonation. larsga (2969), Oslo, Norway
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 22, 2008 Medium brown lasting head. Opaque black body. Harmonic sweet-acidic burnt citric coffee and alcohol aroma with vinegary notes. Sweet-acidic orangey burnt coffee taste, dense and harmonic, with vinegary notes. Sweet dry chocolate aftertaste with citric notes. Good, but less good than I expected. May have been influenced by the vinegar in the previous beer. Need to rerate.
