Commercial Description:
This Belgian Royal Stout was brewed as a tribute to one of America’s best pubs. Jennifer and Chris Lively who run the place may be proud of Ebenezer’s Pub. Not only do they have 35 beers on draught, most of these are hard to find Supreme Belgian Ales. Above that, they have one of the most extensive bottle-conditioned beer lists through different bottling dates we have ever seen. Not only can you drink almost any Belgian beer, the worlds best brewery’s are represented. A lot of the guests talk about the American Kulminator, yet with that difference that the Belgian inspired food, is simply great. Black Albert was brewed and crafted with a 100% Belgian ingredients. Pours a blacker than black beer with an inch of dark tan head that lingers as it cascades into itself. Nice aroma of bitter-sweet chocolate, fresh torrified coffee beans, barley, candy sugar, complex fruits, and floral hops. At the front, there is spiced baker’s chocolate, fresh mocha, caramel like barley touches, and underlying hints of dried fruits which marries the back of your palate and features a Top, and well integrated but not overbearing hop flavour. The after-taste is well balanced and shows a panorama of extreme sensations like chocolate and coffee bitters, a plum cake richness that covers the palate, and a crisp impression of hop bitters that brings elegance and freshness into this massive brew. 330ml bottle from Badbeer. Marked Belgian Royal Stout, I heard that makes a difference as to what batch it is. Pours black with a nice, tan head, good retention, good lace. Smells of dark, sweet fruit. Some smoke, roasty malts. Tastes sweet and dark fruity with some toasty as well as sour malt flavors and alcohol. Full body, good carbonation.

Medium brown lasting head. Opaque black body. Harmonic sweet-acidic burnt citric coffee and alcohol aroma with vinegary notes. Sweet-acidic orangey burnt coffee taste, dense and harmonic, with vinegary notes. Sweet dry chocolate aftertaste with citric notes. Good, but less good than I expected. May have been influenced by the vinegar in the previous beer. Need to rerate. (0.1l taster from bottle at EBF ’08.)

Huge plummy chocolatey beer with some spicy notes. Dry roasty, suprisingly not hugely hoppy end despite the motherload of hops that 100 IBUs suggest. Me likey.

Bottle. Pours opaque black. Towering tan head that fills half the glass and leaves lace blobs. The aroma is sweet, mostly roasted nuts, brown sugar and chocolate, with a little licorice around the margins. Sweet and silky medium-full body with minimal carbonation. Taste of coffee, dried fruit, licorice, chocolate. LOTS of alcohol in this one.

Aroma is yeasy, belgian, lots of fruit, dark malts, sweetness, some alcohol, tartness. Taste is yeasty, dominantly beligian in the profile. Creamy, dense, lots of dark fruit, sour berry, chocolate. Finish is thick and creamy. This is world class. Thanks for the chance to try this, Brad.

Big thanks to Dmac for this bottle. Pours out black with a nice two finger brownish head. Aroma is interesting, chocolate, dried fruits, and maybe even some rum going on there. Taste is very complex, very smooth velvety mouthfeel. Rich, roasted malt, chocolate, dried fruits and some rum-like sweetness. No sign of the 13%. Very well done!

Bottle. Pours black with a little tan head. Nose of liquorice and coffee. Flavour of burned carmel, light alcohol, coffee and chocolate. Pleasant bitter finish. Full bodied. Complex, balanced and very enjoyable.

Bottle from a shop in Brussels. Pours dark black with a nice thick tan head. Aroma is of cherries, almost fruity, some rum, and bakers chocolate. Taste is of burnt carmel, light alcohol and moderate bitterness. This isn’t as bitter as I’ve read, has alot more going on in the palate as it warms. Overall, a very nice beer for my 100th and one I’ll seek out some more. Good job Struise! Update 3Jan09, so I did an imperial stout blind tasting over the holidays. Four beers, this one, Hercule stout, Southern Tier Oat, and Stone 12th Oatmeal Bitter Chocolate. Black Albert was far and away the top rated of the 4. Looked the best, smelled the best, and rated about the same in flavor as the Stone 12th. This coming from non-craft drinking guys that do not know the hype behind any beer. Therefore I think the results speak for themselves, Black Albert is a special beer. Can’t wait to try the oak aged version.
