Bottle from Monk’s. After being tempted by the barman on this one, I admitted that I had two bottles of Black Albert at home unopened, so I’d have loved to have tasted the Black Albert first, but it wasn’t to be, I had to go for this. Completely black with a dark brown head, basically just a smattering atop this beer. Nose is dark woody fruits, chocolate, espresso, bourbon, maltiness, hint of vanilla. Mouth is very very smooth, until the alcohol kicks, liquorice, pontefract cakes and bourbon all fight each other. Woody fruit also in here. A little bit of tobacco towards the end. Superb ale that lasts well in the mouth and slips down smoothly, sweetly, and leaves you gasping for more.

Dec 21, 2009 Large tan head good retention very dark IMP aroma coffee dark fruit chocolate caramel chickory liccorice molasses note cinnamon hint flavour creamy mellow coffee chocolate liccorice smooth bitter very noticeable liccorice good tasting the bourbon puts some flavour into it,nice malt sweetness goes well with the bitter at the finish which is mellow and creamy great on the palate.

Dec 12, 2009 Bottle. Pours a deep chocolate. Very rocky brown head. Falls away quickly leaving nice tan coloured lacing. Appears to be quite oily. Aromas are very complex. Some citrus and heaps of sour cherry initially. Followed by a little malt sweetness, roasted aromas and definitely some bourbon. Fantastic. Flavours are initially malty sweet. There is plenty of roasted malt and certainly some hop bitterness on the finish. Perhaps some of the bourbon is showing through also. Very complex. Great beer.

Dec 3, 2009 25 cl bottle. Nice brown head. Aroma, at first the sour bit of a cantillion with a bit of prunes. the tast goes from sour to weet to caramel and to a nice heavy darkmalt bitter. The biteernes stays for long, which is nicely balanced.

Dec 1, 2009 Bottle sample at a tasting. Black with huge brown head. Strong aroma of brett, oak, cherries, and roasted, slightly coffee-ish, chocolatey malt and bourbon notes. Sweet roasty flavor with some light woody sourness, lots of dark fruits, some pralines and barnyard. Full-bodied. Maybe slightly infected but very enjoyable.

Nov 29, 2009 @ a tasting, thanks DSG for sharing this one, pours black with a nice beige head, aroma of chocolate, bret and acids, roasted flavors, chocolate, dry fruit sweetness, bret, with oaky aftertaste, full bodied. Nice and interesting

Nov 23, 2009 On draught at pre-Zythos bash, Alvinne, March 2009. Very dark. Lots of chewy fruit in the aroma and the flavour. Lovely licorice in the flavour too. Some bitter cocoa and subtle woody vinous notes. But the plummy fruit is in the driving seat. Alcohol is warming but not too boozy. Spectacular stuff. I was enjoying it so much I nearly forgot to make any notes.

Nov 21, 2009 At a tasting, many thanks DSG , dark brown bubbly head, very dark brown almost completly opaque, funky lambicy nose with vinegar and green apples, also cocoa and some cherries coming in, flavours of charred wood and potatos and an artificial sweetness. not balanced and just a little diluted, maybe infected.

Nov 17, 2009 Bottle: i think it was a little infected, sourness in the nose, some brett, wet wood, reminds me of lambic, cocca, cocca butter, milk chocolate, honey, charcoal, gummy bears candy, i’m sure it could have been better.
