RateBeer Special Release:
Behold the second of RateBeer.com’s Worldwide Masters Series! This request edition ale is the crafted alchemy of a party of some of Europe’s finest brewers, Mikkel Bjergsø and Kristian Keller of Mikkeller (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Urbain Coutteau, Carlo Grootaert, Phil Driessens, and Peter Braem of De Struise Brouwers (Woesten-Vleteren, Belgium).
Both breweries have attracted considerable international attention for their artful interpretations of traditional ale styles enlived by a rich sense of invention. And both are also very highly esteemed by the RateBeer.com international community of beer tasters. We hope you enjoy this unique little treasure.
Struise Mikkeller -- the product of master brewing and friendship. Celebrate this sense of camaraderie by sharing this bottle with your good friends!
- Joe Tucker, RateBeer.com

Struise-Mikkeller is as we said in the past "Best of two worlds". We delivered an IPA with 130 IBU, but a bitterness hidden the Struise way, counter balanced by maltyness, alcohol and rest sugars. People who do not like Ipa’s will actually be amazed, the general hop bomb addict will not understand, so yes this is a controverse brew... enjoy anyway!

Pours a hazy amber color with a medium white head and some streams of sticky lacing. Aroma is citrus, mango, some pine, and some grapefruit. Taste is a bit flat overall - some fruit, orange zest, and pine. Cool stuff, but the Americans know what they’re doing when it comes to this style.

Pours a very hazy rich amber color with thin off-white head. Aroma is intense mango, citrus, and floral hops. Taste is intense fruit and pungent citrus hops with a bit of tartness. Alcohol is well hidden and carbonation is mild. This isn’t bad for a Euro-IPA, but I’ll let my jingoism show thru in saying that euro-IIPA’s can’t touch an American IIPA.

Bottle, 330ml. A hazy golden colour with a large head. Aroma of soft, fresh citrus fruits and yeast. A very malty flavour with honey and caramel, Belgian yeast, hoppy notes and some more citrus, some alcohol and bitterness evident in the finish. A delicious, complex, exciting, brew.

Nice amber colour with a huge off-white head. Hoppy, caramelly, typical double IPA aroma with some Mikkellers stamp on it. The taste is a very successfull blend of Belgium and America, fruity, hoppy, juicy, caramelly with some spices. Extremely drinkable and pleasant. Something I try to drink often.

Many thanks to Jon (WeeHeavySD) for this awesome extra. Decanted into a snifter. It is a dark amber color with a big, fluffy white head that takes a while to fade. Aroma is earthy, light citrus, belgian yeastiness and alcohol. Taste is belgian yeastiness, citrus rind, earthiness and some alcohol kick. I really like the citrus rind aspect in this. Medium body with decent carbonation.

Bottle courtesy of Phil L and beermerchants.com was very pleased when I saw a Mikkeller beer in my lottery package. Good work mate! Basically Struise kick arse, MIkkeller kick arse. So when they get together it’s like Rooney and Ronaldo. I’ve loved every beer I’ve had off either of them. This was fantastic. Got the unmistakeable Struise stamp on it but it’s like a Mikkeller remix. Lovely! Tangerine, caramel, Belgian yeast, a tasty lick of alcohol. Complicated and posh and oh so tasty. In the commercial description it mentions controversy, beer geeks offended by it mentioning IPA? Grow up, a great tasting beer in my opinion. Fair play if you don’t like it but how right to my taste. Belter. You’re a good man Phil L. Re-rate - it’s even more me than I first thought! I love this stuff.

11.2oz bottle, via trade with Swolf3, thanks Steven. Nice hazy orange pour, white head. Hoppy, yeasty aroma. Smooth hop bitterness, very drinkable. Can hardly taste the alcohol, very nice.

It is an interesting mix of a Belgian head with an American/Norwegian body. Pleasant enough but the lack of clear identity was a negative for me.
