This request edition ale is the crafted alchemy of a party of some of Europe’s finest brewers, Mikkel Bjergsø and Kristian Keller of Mikkeller (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Urbain Coutteau, Carlo Grootaert, Phil Driessens, and Peter Braem of De Struise Brouwers (Woesten-Vleteren, Belgium).
Both breweries have attracted considerable international attention for their artful interpretations of traditional ale styles enlived by a rich sense of invention. And both are also very highly esteemed by the RateBeer.com international community of beer tasters. We hope you enjoy this unique little treasure.

Struise-Mikkeller is as we said in the past "Best of two worlds". We delivered an IPA with 130 IBU, but a bitterness hidden the Struise way, counter balanced by maltyness, alcohol and rest sugars. People who do not like Ipa’s will actually be amazed, the general hop bomb addict will not understand, so yes this is a controverse brew... enjoy anyway!

Body Amber, murky body with an off-white head. Aroma full of american hops, flowers, grass and some caramel malts. very well balanced and still powerful. Heavily bitter flavour, well balanced. Dry finish. Nice IPA.

Pours a cloudy brownish/orange color with a moderate head and decent lacing and some sediment. Aroma is dominated by citrus notes, espescially Orange, as well as molasses or butterscotch. Tasteis pine notes up front, medium bitterness, with chocolate and some roasted malts in the finish, which is moderate.

Poured a hazy copper color with a decent white head and good lacing. The aroma was very busy. Malts, light yeast and lots of citrus and pine swirling about. The flavor was a marriage of Belgian ale and lots of pine hops. Sugary malts and yeast prevent the hops from ruling the day. Medium in body and well carbonated. Not a bad beer.

Pours deep brown into a snifter. Mocha micro head with excellent retention leaves sheet lacing as it slowly recedes. Orange and grapefruit aromas. Bitter, dry, astringent resin upfront turning to summer fruits in the middle and back to a bitter lasting pine finish.

11.2 oz bottle poured into an English pint glass. Head! Huge head! This beer pours with a substantial head and a murky brown body. Maybe because I have the wrong glass but this is not an attractive beer. This definetely has an IPA aroma to it. It is pretty typical super-hop smelling. That is to say, bitter resin smelling. It’s a nice smell but not terribly noteworthy as it is lost in a myriad of other IIPAs. The body Is surprisingly smooth for an IIPA. Wee! 9% beers like this can be dangerous. The smoothness almost makes you think this beer is under carbonated but after a bit more reflection it isn’t at all. The hops are also artfully balanced with the alcohol and malt. This is an ugly but very tasty treat. The flavor is pretty much pine, hops and a touch of honey. The finish is a little bitter but not offensive.

From the bottle at 33 wine bar in saint louis. Very unique brew. Pours a dark mahogony with a thick head that lasts forever, a ton of lacing on the glass. It’s a very malty brew with an incredible dry, spicy hop finish. Unlike any finish I’ve tasted. It’s a bit astringent at the end, but I love the uniqueness of it.

Courtesy of Chris Lively. Alchemy, sex in a bottle. Head like Einstien, mouth like Angelina Jolie, the color of an old, polished penny. Sweet, red grapefruit, lovely caramel malts, legendary finish. A beer with an ABV of 9% should not go down like this. O please, Mssrs. Struiese & Mikkel, do it again?

Bottle @ Hashigo Zake tasting. Orange copper with thin white head. Caramel and grapefruit aroma. Enoutmouly bitter, yet still wonderfully balanced. Flavour is Grapefruit, caramel, alcohol and bitterness, so much bitterness. The bitterness isn’t up front though, it follows after the caramel/grapefruit and just lasts and lasts. Bitter moves into your mouth and sets up shop. Oh yeah, very smooth too.
