The body is a hazy brown. Aroma is sweet with some citrusy hops and a bit of belgian yeast showing itself. Strong bitter flavor all the way through with more malt presence toward the beginning. Pine and caramel flavors are evident in the body. The finish is pleasantly dry with little aftertaste. crowderm (285), Recklinghausen, Germany
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 26, 2009 Copper pour, pretty dark for an IIPA. Thick off-white head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit and a hint of garbage at first, though this fades. Flavor of mild tropical fruit. Mango, buttery papaya, caramel, and a solid peppery bitterness. The finish is mostly pepper. Pretty good. Davros (249), Australia
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 25, 2009 Pours a coppery orange with a massive persistent head and magnificent lacing.
Aroma shows lot of piney, resinous hops (simcoe style) along with the usual grapefruit, and some earthy notes. Sweet confectionery and caramel malt follow underneath. Very nice, but not as complex as I expected.
Lots of sweet caramel first up upon tasting before more resinous and piney hops kick in, finishing with a fairly powerful complex bitter finish, complimented by some clean alcohol. The candi sugar is hidden by caramel malt.
Smooth body with creamy carbonation, the alcohol just shows in a subtle warming of the palate.
I’m betting the aroma would be better fresh. OleR (2111), Oslo, Norway

Heavy hop aroma, pine needles, grapefruit, grass and faint resin. A light spicy, caramelly malt scent to balance. Some yeast notes. Taste has lots of sweetish malts, enought to deal with the big amount of flavoring and bittering hops. Evergreen, citrus and grass is detected. Also some spice and yeast tones. Medium to full body. Oily mouthfeel. Heavy bitterness in the finish. Very potent, good stuff. fistfull (30), Halethorpe, Maryland, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 17, 2009 Updated: Oct 31, 2009This is about as close to perfection as it comes; for me, anyway! Incredible color, superb "marshmallow" head! The most impressive thing was the fact that this bee incorporated the best of two worlds: Belgian abbey tones with a blast of hops! This is some sort of ’hybrid’ type beer that has been excellently crafted by brewmaster who truly know what the hell they’re doing! Luxurious, lavish, liquid love! If only there was more.....(Sigh)!
Re-rated - second bottle - I love this beer and much of the above commentary remains firm - second bottle didn’t quite blow me away like first bottle; still, a dynamite beer - if only I could have one every day! Bought the last four on the shelf and never looked back! bigguns22 (113), Maryland, USA

Aroma of fresh berry and pineapple. This is one of the most balance beers that i’ve had. Great balance of lingering hop, malt and refrashing citrus. twindog (98), Hampstead, Maryland, USA

I love both Mikkeller and Struise, but I think with some of their IPA’s they are a bit off in terms of how I
view an imperial/double. I expect made hops. Instead, with this beer, I get mad malts! A lovely dark brown caramel
color, with a slightly annoying fluffy head. The beer looks pretty good; seems a bit over carbonated. The head slowly
fades away. To me, it looks like a good imperial/double. HUGE caramel malt aroma. Not even the slightest bit of
hop aroma to be found. WTF? I mean this is a pungent beer don’t get me wrong, but where the hell are the hops? Smells
like I am about to drink a barley wine, or a great Belgian! The score does not reflect that the beer isn’t pungent, but it is just lacking
hops; something I believe a double IPA should have...right? Now that the head has settled, I can actually drink.
A caramel/yeast/sugar flavor with the faintest flavor of hops. Ok, the bittering hop is decent, but I feel the
beer is just lacking hops. I have realized that with some beers 100+ IBUs doesn’t mean shit! Very smooth beer, with
some hops, but not enough for me to go crazy over. Overall, call this a Belgian or barley wine, and I am happy. The
hops play a small but interesting role.
