Commercial Description:
RateBeer Special Release:
Behold the second of RateBeer.com’s Worldwide Masters Series! This request edition ale is the crafted alchemy of a party of some of Europe’s finest brewers, Mikkel Bjergsø and Kristian Keller of Mikkeller (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Urbain Coutteau, Carlo Grootaert, Phil Driessens, and Peter Braem of De Struise Brouwers (Woesten-Vleteren, Belgium).
Both breweries have attracted considerable international attention for their artful interpretations of traditional ale styles enlived by a rich sense of invention. And both are also very highly esteemed by the RateBeer.com international community of beer tasters. We hope you enjoy this unique little treasure.
Struise Mikkeller -- the product of master brewing and friendship. Celebrate this sense of camaraderie by sharing this bottle with your good friends!
- Joe Tucker, RateBeer.com

Struise-Mikkeller is as we said in the past "Best of two worlds". We delivered an IPA with 130 IBU, but a bitterness hidden the Struise way, counter balanced by maltyness, alcohol and rest sugars. People who do not like Ipa's will actually be amazed, the general hop bomb addict will not understand, so yes this is a controverse brew... enjoy anyway!

What a gem. I am really liking these Struise beers, they taste almost identical to De Dolle beers, which I know I reference far too often. This one tastes like a belgian strong sour IPA hybrid, and where the 130 IBU’s are totally hidden, the sugary vinous qualities are excellent. Too bad these beers are so outrageously priced or I would drink them more often.

Perfectly even opaque honey color with a dense white head. Aroma is sweet with tart, almost fizzy elements. Very little noticeable hop presence in smell. Taste is unlike my expectations of the style: just as sour as bitter, this may be one you must taste fresh to understand it’s classification as a IIPA. Starts out with cutting lemon, transitions to alcohol bitterness, then fades into slight vegetal noble hop bitterness. Tastes are balanced and smooth throughout, and the spices blend too well to place them at all. $6.79/11.2oz

My Bottom Line:
Piney herbs and flowers bloom atop honeyed caramel sweetness before a levelled resinous finish delineates this pillowy and balanced avant-garde strong ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A mushroom cloud of foam slowly collapses into the misty golden amber. The slightest yeast pour though obscures all.
-A narrow trail of alcohol is found in the back.
-The same intensity in flavor can be found throughout.
-A doughy yeast presence adds complexity.
-The yeast sludge mars many subtleties, so including it is not a great idea imho.
-The expansive carbonation and calculated level of dextrins form a delightfully comfortable mouthfeel.
-Do not drink this expecting a Double IPA.

Bottle.

Hazy orange amber body with a lasting off-white head. Perfumy, strong malt/hop aroma. Very Nice. Nice hop bitterness that’s supported by a firm malt base. Nice drying finish.

Bottle shared by Jason. Cloudy orange body under a small tan head. The aroma gives candy sugar, a touch of malt, and some bitter hops. Flavor-wise it adds a pleasant rounded malt profile alongside some pretty crazy bitterness. The high level of bitterness doesn’t do a lot for me but the malt profile in this thing is fantastic.

Bottle at home 12-08-08 purchased from Cave Direct Beer Merchants (Mixed case of Mikkeller Beer) Pours hzy mid amber with a white head that is flecked sporadically with yeast. Wonderful hoppy bite that is immediately softened and tempered with a nice sweetness. There are definate and obvious infuences from both Struise and Mikkeller but I know I’m going agaisnt the grain but I don’t think they combine as well as I would hope, in saying that this is still a very good beer.
