Grovlam (2997), Copenhagen, Denmark Feb 14, 2008 Bottle 33 cl. Huge thick and very creamy like beige head that just looks amazing and lasted for ever. Dark mahogany color. Excellent lacework was left in the glass. Out comes a very complex aroma with notes ala prunes, dates and other dried fruity tones. Mixing in was yeast, melon, oak and some wine like Calvados oak notes as well. Very vinous and potent sniff. Underlying liquorish and roasted malt could be detected. Over the palate comes an explosion of complexity like never before. Initial thought was more like a wine then any other beer that I have ever tried. Again vinous and alcohol, berries, oak, hint of spice, hint of almost smoke like notes. Heavy and thick body with an average carbonation. Heavy sweet flavor and yet very balanced with notes of bitterness and hint of acidic could be detected. Lingering vinous oaky liquorish and light chocolate finish with an alcoholic warming feel to it. What can I say, simply one of the best beers that I have ever enjoyed. I guess my rating just tippet this beer into top 50 which I totally think it deserves.
HogTownHarry (3186), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Aug 28, 2008 Bottle (330ml). Poured muddy red-brown with an average foamy beige head - not much the laces (harumph). Lovely, lovely aroma - complex spice and tart fruity malt, mild astringent oak resin and yeast - alcohol not all that noticeable; very, very promising (8+). The taste - initially I am a bit put off, the dry astringent woodiness is almost too forward, and there’s an odd lactic sourness too, but still the spice/raisin/yeast maltiness is complex and rewarding, so great marks from me! Thick, somewhat squeaky mouthfeel, a tad still (after all that time in-barrel I understand), with a dry tart malty finish. Overall, very smooth, and while the oak is quite mild in the taste, I expect it to mellow further with another year or so of cellaring - very very good, and worth a revisit down the road. PaulHegedus (43), Brampton, Ontario, Canada Aug 26, 2008 Bottle at Volo Cafe, Aug. 2008. Certainly, this beer is very good, though it gets too much attention in my mind. The colour is beautiful brown, with a strong, persistent head. I like the aroma too: sweet, with dark sugars, raisin, vanilla. The flavour is far too sweet; it overwhelms the other complex flavours: raisin, brown sugar, caramel and black licorice. espenra (103), Oslo, Norway Aug 22, 2008 33cl bottle from Barley Wine. It poured a dark brown colour with a medium beige head that settles down fast in the glass. It has a sour aroma that that smells of yeast, malts, dark fruits and alcohol. The flavour is dry and spicy and tastes alcohol, malts, and dark fruits. It has a lingering aftertaste. sk8viking (6078), Copenhagen, Denmark Aug 19, 2008 Bottle. A dark brown beer with a beige head.
