LanceUppercut (105), Sweden Sep 30, 2009 Aroma is yeasty, vinous and funky. Taste is complex: Red wine, apples, plums, oak, cherries. Finish is dry and acidic. The calvados-aging has made it an extreme beer! Not always so pleasant or drinkable, but very interesting! Ygberg (82), Sweden Sep 29, 2009 Aroma of yeast, smelly feet(?) and red wine. Appearance is dark red/brown with almost no head. Flavor of calvados, rassins, apple tart, red wine, prune and oak.Very weak carbonation and extremely dry. Overall a very interesting and extreme beer with grate qualities but with weaknesses. jfb (413), Weihenstephan, Germany Sep 28, 2009 (bottle, 2006) pours the darkest ruby colour with a dense, short-lived beige head. aroma of dark fruits, caramel and dark chocolate, sweet spices, noteably cinnamon, clove and vanilla, with some oaky overtones, alcohol and perhaps a few hints of brown sugar. flavour is less spicy than the aroma, with strong notes of oak and some yeast and a long, lightly sour grainy finish, no alcohol presence at all. medium to strong body with very smooth carbonation - very easy drinking! MrChopin (621), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 27, 2009 ’05 Bottle thanks to Glouglouburp! Dark-mahogany with a lush, creamy beige head. Slight sourness blocks the nose like OldMrCrow describes, sweet, peppery, creamy malt behind the initial sour twang, also some light brown sugar and hints of berry. Flavor is similar, yeasty malt with decent background in dried fruit. Nice carbonation, not overly yeasty but with some punch and very long finish. Good beer, like most Struise, but the barrel knocks out some of the nuance of the regular. yumyum (118), barrie, Ontario, Canada Sep 16, 2009 a very fine brew. I prefer the original pannepot yet this one did have a stronger more powerful nose than the orignal. The oakiness does add complexity to the flavour but I found that it also added sweetness (perhaps a bit more than I would like) Vanilla and dark fruiits are prominent. A fine brew.
