jimmay (179), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Mar 15, 2009 330 ml bottle. Pours brown, with caramel head, a little cloudy. Large carbonation. Aroma is very sweet, brown sugar. Taste is also sweet, like caramel, or melted brown sugar/buttery, no taste of alcohol, despite 10%. Fred82 (343), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Mar 9, 2009 bottle at bistro L’autre Oeil. Dark black with medium brown creamy head. Rich aroma of coffee, chocolate and raisins. Taste is sweet and fruity, raisins, and roasted malt. Warm alcohol on the finish. Well hidden alcohol overall. Small bitterness and a bit dry on the finish. Medium carbonation. Awesome beer, nice balance, well impresed. Rating 56. Gr0ve (1382), Oslo, Norway Mar 7, 2009 330 ml bottle. Very dark brown, almost black, and lets a little dark red colour through. Medium-sized off-white head. Initially there is an instant feeling of scotch whisky and oak. Lots of vanilla and oak, and a little roasted character. Complex malty flavours with a surprising brettanomyces twist. Flavourwise it is rich, but with an acidic flavour. A little acetobacter and other sour flavours that balances the complex oak and whisky nicely. A very interesting beer, but I find it a little too thin given its other characteristics. jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 3, 2009 2009-02-26. Very dark brown body with a mdoest tan head. (3+) Lightly boozy aroma has a sweet fruity malt character. Mil sugary caramel. Nice but more muted than I would have expected. Flavour is similarly quite fruity, dark fruit with a bit of a twang, over a sweet malt and sugar base. Touch of mild wood notes perhaps? Overall the twang of not quite sourness is a bit distracting from the finer fruit and malt character. (7+) Smooth medium to full bodied palate would benefit from just a touch more carbonation. (3+) Pleasant, but the regular version stands up better in my memory. Bottle c/o HogTownHarry polomagnifico (532), Saginaw, Michigan, USA Feb 28, 2009 2005 Bottle with big thanks to ygtbsm94 for this great bonus brew! Aroma has notes of dark dried fruits, port, oak, spice, and a subtle earthy yeast. Awesome. Dark amber hue that sits black in the sniffer. Average sized frothy off-white head that diminished and left some lace. Flavor is sweet, earthy and a little tart. Palate is medium bodied and soft. Very nice beer that has aged quite well. Very complex beer that opens up quite nicely as it warms. Wonderful. fata2683 (837), Panama City, Florida, USA Feb 28, 2009 bottle, thanks for sharing SHIG! Pours, dark sherry color, thin off white head. Oak, candy sugar, plum and sherry notes. Flavors are sweet dark fruit, spice, and an earthy wood flavor. Very complex and long lasting finish. Awesome beer! MitchWayne (264), Kokkola, Finland Feb 27, 2009 Not as soft as the regular one that I love almost to the point of obsession, the wooden notes kind of override some of the more pleasant ones in this. Still vinous and really good but for the added price this is oddly a downgrade in many ways. CapnCascade (116), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Feb 23, 2009 Pours dark brown with ruby tinges, wispy beige head with some retention. Aroma is sweet, slightly vinous, and oaky with a hint of acetic acid sourness. Barrel aging has mellowed out the dark fruit character quite considerably in comparison with the 2005 Old Fisherman’s Ale, and oak is noticeable in the flavour. Mouthfeel is on the light side but not thin.
