Grovlam (2984), Copenhagen, Denmark May 13, 2007 Bottle @ Řl festivalen 2007 in Copenhagen. [HUGE thanks to the Struise guys for making this happen] A huge crowd of RateBeerians was gathered around three tables as the great stuff arrived directly from Belgium. The question was, could they surpass the already legendary Pannepot. Initial appearance was small creamy beige head that mostly diminished. Properly coursed by the oak aging as the regular Pannepot had a very foamy appearance. Still some good lacework was displayed. Colour was muddy dark brown. At first sniff the aroma appeared somewhat weak. Mostly because it was too cold. As it warmed up, an explosion of notes appeared. Especially the Oak and wood/vanilla aroma became evident. Also notes of apricot, caramel, liquorish, cinnamon, fruit, molasses, light chocolate, prune, spice, date, and soy sauce….yes the list goes on and on. Full bodied with an average carbonation and every so lightly warming alcoholic texture. Unbelievably well balanced flavour. The mouthful was just so round and creamy like. This goes down so smooth. The most incredible lingering sweet finish.
Jukkabro (2349), Tampere, Finland Aug 17, 2008 Black colored with medium sized light brown head. Vinous aroma with bubblegum, licorice and raspberry-caramelly notes, weird one. Not too much oak here in flavor, vanilla makes nice combination with some spices. Aftertaste is sweet still with berries, licorice and some sourness. cab (709), Denmark Aug 9, 2008 Bottle.33cl. It has a beautiful, lasting, foamy, beige head. The aroma is so very complex. It has all kind of notes, several dark fruits, like dates and prunes. rallison (43), USA Jul 23, 2008 Thanks Carlos for cracking open this beautiful 750 for our tasting!
Red wine, spice and raisins in the aroma.
Complex taste. Raisins, grapes, wine and brown sugar play together. Woody and slightly vinous. Lots of spice character.
High carbonation yet quite rich - but not thick nor cloying in any way. Brown sugar spice on the finish.
Very nice beer. Side by side with the regular Pannepot, this beer is just not quite as good. Is this a great beer? Yes. But, the oak aging seems to take a little away from the base beer while making the flavors conflict ever so slightly - although, this beer is also slightly more complex than the base beer as well.
Quite simply, I’ll take regular Pannepot over this just barely (it has taken me a long time to come around to this conclusion - used to be that I couldn’t stand the spices in regular Pannepot!), but would jump at the chance to drink either one! MaltOMeal (270), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Jul 20, 2008 750ml bottle shared, thanks to Papsoe. This poured dark brown with a tan head which produced great lacing. Nose was of dark fruit, brown sugar, oak and spices. Taste was of pepper and spices with vinous fruit. Very complex. Mouthfeel was medium with a dry finish and some alcohol noticeable. Incredible stuff! RomanW70 (284), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Jul 15, 2008 Had bottle at Delerium Tremens on 6/22. One of the best beers I’ve ever head. Aroma of dark fruits, dark caramel, spice, and licorice. Taste is even better, sweet, but with notes of wine, wood, spice, and dark fruits. An exceptional, exceptional beer.
