hapjydeuce (763), Del Mar, California, USA Mar 3, 2008 Sampled at cquiroga’s 3rd Annual Woodshop Tasting. Wetherel brought a 750ml of this, thanks John! Sampled alongside the Pannepot Grand Reserva. One of my favorites out of the many epic beers we tried that evening. The oak presence adds a nice layer of complexity to this already amazing concoction. Hazy burgundy color with a big light brown head and bubbles. Looks appetizing. Great aroma of toasty Belgian yeast, plum and raisin with lots of wood in the background. Flavors are similar to regular Pannepot, with toffee, more raisin, chocolate and cinnamon. The oak aging slides a subtle woody character into the finish, rounding out the bitterness and resulting in a "wow" feeling with each sip. It still has that tingly, soothing mouth feel as well. Just a notch above the Grand Reserva I think; overall I would say that I still like the original a bit more. Great! Pours dark brown with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is sweet and yeasty and nice. Taste is sweet robust syrupy, very nice killer palate.
29th Rating from 3rd Annual Woodshop tasting in Temple City, CA. 3/1/08. One hell of a day put on by Cquiroga, thanks for a killer day Chris. Also spent the day there with bikesanbeer, my girlfriend Cyn, wetherel, JohnC, DenverLogan, dirty martini, jasparg, DrBil, IPAFiend, awaisanen and many others, this was one crazy day. Bottle from wetherel. Pours amber with an off whtie ring. Nose is mellower than grand reserva. Taste is sweet and complex, big and very nice. Great beer, like it about equally to grand reserva for different reasons. ogglethorp (882), Ohio, USA Feb 26, 2008 Bottle shared by moejuck at c-bus 10. Pours dark brown with a medium sized tan colored head. Aroma is choclate, dried dark fruits, oak, vanilla, ginger. Flavor is chocolate, spruce, oak, vanilla, ginger, clove, roast. Palate is full bodied, medium carbonation, finished sweet and warming. This is fantastic, however I think I like the un-oaked slightly better. jehoey (766), Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 26, 2008 Sampled at Kulminator: Aroma is full of caramel richness, with layers of wood, and sourness. Pours a deep reddish brown with 2 fingers of head. This beer laced very thickly against the glass and even the bottle. Really beautiful to watch as well as drink. Flavor is extremely balanced. Carmel, wood, sourness, and a hefty hop bitterness make this superb, while having caramel flavor this beer is not lacking dryness either. Mouth feel is slightly thick, but not syrupy. Really an amazing beer.
drewbeerme (2223), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 16, 2008 750ml bottle. 2006 vintage. huge thanks to pantanap for breaking this bad boy out and then pairing it with regular pannepot. pours dark frown with off white head (slightly lightly in color and not nearly as dark a head as regular pannepot). the aroma is very similar to regular pannepot but taken down a notch (not as sweet, nutmeg, and other spices), notes of oak, nutmeg, cardamom, and dark fruits. flavor is held together nicely by the oak with some oak, vanilla, dark fruits, and nutmeg. the flavors are toned down, less sweet, and more together than regular pannepot. the finish is drier, slightly sour, and seemingly more complete than regular pannpot. also the mouth feel is fuller than regular pannepot. in the end, it holds a lot of the original pannepot characteristics but less sweet and spices making it mellower and even more drinkable, however, I like the intense sweet and spice notes in the regular panapot so they score the same for me as both are amazing beers for different reasons. pantanap (1323), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 16, 2008 Updated: Mar 17, 2008750ml bottle thanks to jeppe! cheers my man!.....pours deeper brown with some reddish plum hues (lighter than the standard). topped of by a hefty fluffy light tan head....nose was nice and oaky and still full of spice but less so than the regular version. nice soury-sweet-spiciness that works with a nice synergy.....so soft and supple in the mouth, velvety smooth on the tongue. specifics fall upon the dark fruit yet still maintaining the nice spiciness of the original. perhaps this is a little too soft for its own good in comparison but i think i mght give the edge out to this original if only .1 more.
Add +.1 because i can’t stop thinking about this one. Will need to try this against the grand reserve somehow. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Feb 14, 2008 750 ml bottle thanks to Papsoe. Wonderful aromas of chocolate and cherry. Some wood in there too. Flavor was very mild wood with more cherry and some alcohol. I definitely like the original better. But I am starting to get a bit wooded out. Still, this is a wonderful beer. gotbeach (128), San Diego, California, USA Feb 9, 2008 Bottle@Dr.Bills Poured brown and clear with a lasting head. A light aroma of fruit, fizzy, with a great warm smooth taste. A great tasty beer.
