Unclear, dark brown with a large light brown head, mostly lasting, nice lacings. Aroma heavy malty (dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, alcohol/vineous). Flavor heavy sweet and though in perfect balance because of the alcohol and taste of the barrels. Full body. Perfect. Maybe the raring should have been even higher. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA

Some wood in there too. Flavor was very mild wood with more cherry and some alcohol. I definitely like the original better. But I am starting to get a bit wooded out. Still, this is a wonderful beer. tronraner (1938), Seymour, Tennessee, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 26, 2009 750 mL bottle at the ’09 Fish Fry. Pours dark red brown with a large beige head. The aroma is amazing: raisin, yeast, anise, graham crackers, oak, rum, brown sugar, clove, dark fruit, zest. It smells so good it took me several minutes to take my nose out of the glass to take a sip. The flavor is sweetish at first with raisin, rum, brown sugar, and some sticky prune juice notes. But through the mouth it picks up a faint tartness that cuts the sweetness beautifully. A distinct sharp oak quality develops as well and really does bring the flavors together. The finish and aftertaste are dry and just a touch spicy with residual oakiness lingering far into the dry-ish aftertaste. Very complex and perfectly balanced. This beer is amazing. I want more! swoopjones (1920), Buffalo, New York, USA

Pours opaque dark brown with a fluffy tan head and a yeasty aroma. The flavor is raisin, plum and slightly sour with lots of oak. It is much more mellow than the regular pannepot and certainly more sour from the barrell aging. The sour stays on the palate a while. Lots of spice. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
