Cork, marmite, apple, coconut, oak, salt and glue showing up in both nose and taste. Sweet. Malt accentuated. Full bodied. Lively carbonation. The characteristics which appear from the ageing are quite prominent. Very low bitterness. Sweet malty finish with hints of apple and huge amounts of spinach and apricot. Dissapointing. Great look of dark brown pour with good off-white head with notes of oude, oak, vanilla, dried fruits, "old" yeast, spices such as nutmeg, complexity and indeed a world class brew. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 8, 2008 750ml bottle generously shared by hellomynameis. Lots of candied fruit on the nose. Brown sugar. Alcohol, but not in a bad way. Some light, nutty sherry notes. A touch of cinnamon and ginger. Spicy yeast with just a touch of moist oak. Pours thick, dark copper with rich amber highlights topped off by a thin khaki head. Alcohol soaked figs and dates initially on the tongue. Plenty of yeasty spice, brown sugar, wood. Quite tasty, but there’s an odd copper note that I can’t quite shake. Light toasted bread. Creamy on the tongue. Lush and silky mouthfeel. Hmmm. Certainly a beer to make me think. Mahogany hued and skinned with a thin rim of beige. Aroma is very deep; buttery brandy, vanilla, banana, chocolate, and caramel; hints of bubblegum and plenty of extraneous sweetness and rum like alcohol. Flavor is both zesty and rich, with a lovely balance of honey, peppermint, cocoa, honey, and golden fruit. Slightly sandy, with hints of cherry cola, licorice, brown spices, and tropical vinousness. Canned peaches. Layers unfold at a slow, leisurely speed. Chocolate. Hazelnuts. Red apple. Delicate and bold. Palate is brisk but full in body; slightly sour, and mildly acidic. Finish is vinous and slightly tart, with raspberry, pear, cherry, and chocolate; nut skins, and some alcohol. Sticky and crisp at the same time, and thoroughly generous in the mouth. Beautiful and refined; deep as the universe. SuzyGreenberg (1379), Seattle, Washington, USA
