| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Feb 16, 2008 Updated: Mar 17, 2008750ml bottle thanks to jeppe! cheers my man!.....pours deeper brown with some reddish plum hues (lighter than the standard). topped of by a hefty fluffy light tan head....nose was nice and oaky and still full of spice but less so than the regular version. nice soury-sweet-spiciness that works with a nice synergy.....so soft and supple in the mouth, velvety smooth on the tongue. specifics fall upon the dark fruit yet still maintaining the nice spiciness of the original. perhaps this is a little too soft for its own good in comparison but i think i mght give the edge out to this original if only .1 more.
Add +.1 because i can’t stop thinking about this one. Will need to try this against the grand reserve somehow. JohnnyJ (1321), Carlsbad, California, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 24, 2007 Draft - Brown body with an orange touch, big off-white head leaving beautiful lacing; Big very special nose with lots of aroma: camphor, tobacco, a very little red wine like touch to it as well; Very soft carbonation, super soft smooth texture, deep balanced and complex; Long finish where the alcohol really appears like in a Single-Malt whiskey (I mean in the same great way, and off cause not as powerful), lots of smooth complex caramel aromas, tobacco (like in a syrah wine). Amazing beer! boFNjackson (1302), Portland, Oregon, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 9, 2008 Pours cloudy dark brown, with a large, tan head. Aroma is fruit, oak, alcohol, and malt. Flavor is fruit, smoke, malt, vanilla, and oak. A nice medium bodied palate. Nothing beats you over the head, as far as the oak, or the fruit. It’s a well balanced, well made, tasty brew. Thanks for this bottle, Brad. golubj (1289), Sunnyvale, California, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 13, 2007 From a 750mL Bottle. Generously shared by CaptainCougar, courtesy of boboski. Pours a somewhat transparent, deep dark brown color with a tall layer of fizzy head that fizzles out flat a bit quickly. The aroma has a distinct oaky dryness that boldly lurks over the rich backbone of molasses and gingerbread cookie malt characters. A lot of really lovely things going on, but most of them I can attribute to the wonderful beer existing in the pre-oak stage. There’s still some of that lightly toasted fennel seed, fig spice, and tobacco leaf notes tantalizing the senses, but the big vanilla oakiness is overwhelming some of the more subtle nuances a bit too much. Medium bodied, sparkling mouthfeel with a crisp effervescence. Lightly sweet, smokey caramel-toffee melanoidins start out the flavors, followed by a wave of oak and vanilla. Toasted brown sugar and flambeed pecans. Unfortunately, I’m enjoying the pre-oak flavors more than the oak, although that isn’t to say the oak is unpleasant - the original is just too damn amazing and complex to have such a bold dimension added to the mix. But realistically, how could this have been a disappointment at all from such a high starting point? Another fantastic beer from an amazing brewer. Thanks for sharing, Tom!
