Commercial Description:
The Pannepot Reserva was an idea from my brew collegue Carlo who wanted to age Pannepot in genuine French oak barrels (barrique 225 liters). We have brewed 90HL at the end of 2005 which has been aging on oak ever since (14 months). 30 Hl was bottled Tuesday 8th May 2007. 60Hl has been transferred now to second hand calvados oak vessels and will be bottled again early autumn 2007, we will name that batch Pannepot Grand Reserva. As quality and results rule at Struise, the Reserva was already brewed again and aging on oak.
Latest bottling: april 08

750 ml bottle - Columbus X tasting

Thanks to whomever brought this - I believe it was moejuck. Knowing this was a Top 50 beer I was eager to give it a try despite being letdown just a bit by regular Pannepot. It was still a fantastic beer; it just does not knock my socks off enough to deserve Top 50 status (perhaps Top 100 is more accurate). This one is about the same. I would gladly drink it again for being an excellently made beer but in a pinch would take the regular release instead.

Aroma / Appearance - Oak, toffee, chocolate and plum form a cohesive set of scents. A woody backbone holds it all together. If I close my eyes I almost can imagine turkey and dressing - perhaps this would be a good beer to open at Thanksgiving if it were more readily accessible. The deep brown body was the color of liquid toffee. Gooey lacing stuck to the sides of my glass along with an ashen lacing.

Flavor / Palate - The first sip was mostly vinous with hints of toffee and chocolate pudding along for the ride. For such a complex beer it was very easy going and light on the palate. I found it just a hair more boring than regular Pannepot which is to say that given the ability I would rate it about .05 points lower. The only real proof that this has some punch comes towards the end when the alcoholic presence kicks in. Overall another well made beer from Struisse that I hope to see on the shelves in the US some time.

An almost black colored beer, with a beautiful dark thick foamy beige head. It leaves a beautiful lace on the glass. The aroma of dark malts with dried fruits. Some sweet with spices. Complex. The taste has a thick dark malty flavor with fruits like prune and raisins. There are notes of oak. Also some spices in the back. The aftertaste is smooth, with some nice bittersweet with warming alcohol.

Thanks to MaltOMeal for this 2006 bottle! Shared with MaltOMeal and thickfreakness. Pours a dark brown with a tan head that leaves pretty lacing. Nose is brown sugar, pitted dark fruits, oak and winter spices, including nutmeg. Strong fruit flavor of plums and figs. Sugar and white pepper give extra levels to this beer. Palate has a rich sweetness and covering mouthfeel. This is a well layered beer...enjoyed every sip. Thanks for sharing Bill.

Thanks kiefdog for the share. Amazing beer that is heavy, but lovable. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Nose is caramel, candy sugar, and some raisiny goodness with some alcohol. Flavor is very similar with a thick sweetness and lots of sugary, raisiny goodness coming out. Deep, dark and excellent complex beer.

Édition 2005. Robe brune légèrement voilée aux reflets blonds surmontée d’une mousse blanche épaisse. Arômes de fruits et de levures. Saveurs de figues, de fruits, de levures, de caramel, de chêne et de coriandre.

750mL bottle, 2005 vintage, poured into a snifter. The cork popped out loudly on this one and pours dark brown out of the bottle and settles in an opaque near-black that is a deep, clear copper when held up to the light. The head is massive, cream-colored and very rocky on the bottom with tons of carbonation feeding the head throughout. Aroma is very sweet with tons of candi sugar and dark fruits, raisins, grapes, plums, etc. Has a cola-ish aroma to it with hints of the wood that leads to a sherry scent overall. The has the same candi sugar up front with some sweet dark fruit with a bit of sourness to them, just a touch. I agree with others that the wood seems to have smoothed the taste a bit and minimized some of the huge complexities that I really enjoy in the original. The booze and wood is definitely present in the finish, leaving a burn going down. The mouthfeel is velvety smooth and medium bodied with lots of carbonation. It’s definitely slightly drier than the original with a bit more wood presence. Needless to say, this is a great beer, and the wood presence is subtle but makes it a different beer from the original.

C-bus 10. Bourbon, Belgian yeast, and some sweet caramel in the aroma. Deep brown body with a medium head. Full palate with slightly above average carbonation. Effervescence strikes me when I first sip and then the belgian yeast flavor comes on heavy. Caramel malts and belgian spices make up the second wave of flavors--with very faint hints of oak in the finish. Very good, but I prefer the regular version.
