Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Pours a dirty brown color with a medium sized tan head. Big nose of fruity malts, yeast esters and some subtle Belgian spice characteristics. Big bold flavors swim harmoniously in the mouth creating a very smooth flavor profile and body. Malt is obviously dominant, the way the fruitiness carries over from the nose is very impressive and well executed. Medium bodied and incredibly (insanely) drinkable. One of my favorite quads of all time, highly recommended.

Bottle: Brown, not clear. Pitted fruit and dry wine-like aroma. Flavor of dry, splintery wood with a little liquor thrown in. It has a dry finish.

Bottle vintage 2006 Pours out a dark brown topped with a small sand head. Aroma was of sweetness, pit fruit, rich malts, and plenty spice. Tast was more of the fruit sweetness, lots of spice and even a little smoke. A nice wood touch aswell. Thanks Sam You the man.

Vintage 2007. Pours dark reddish brown with a plentiful tan head. Aroma is fruity and sweet. I smell raisins, cherries, yeast, maple syrup, spices, and vanilla. Taste is quite spicy and very flavorful. There are plenty of woody and floral qualities. Rich malts, yeast, dark fruits, apples. Alcohol really comes through as it warms. This is rich, velvety and completely floods the mouth. This is a remarkable brew.

2006 Vintage. 11.2 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with brentfeesh. Pours a dark brown that does not allow light to pass through with a moderate off-white head that lasted until mid-glass and left partial lace. Very pleasant aroma of raisins, figs, molasses, oak, and just a bit of smokiness. The flavor is equally lovely but different from the aroma. Not as fruity as the aroma suggests, while the malt is a stronger presence and is more earthy and a bit more smokey than in the aroma. Some brown sugar and nutmeg are also present in the flavor. Dries out a bit on the palate as it approaches the finish. Full bodied. A very enjoyable beer, although not a top 50 candidate for me personally.

2007 Vintage at Monk’s in Philly. Beautiful pour with an aroma of dark fruit and yeast. Slcohol integrated perfectly into the flavor. Expected it to be the best, and just a little bit let down.

Bottled 33cl. Vintage 2007. Courtesy of bierkoning. It pours a deep mahogany coloured beer with a average-sized dense beige head. Some lacework. Aroma: Incredibly rich and complex, deeply pleasant with vanilla, maple syrup, candied fruits, figs, molasses, nutmeg, berries, ginger, clotted cream, apples, blue cheese and mince pies appearing. Vinous. Terribly good. Flavor and palate: A lot of rum, raisins, plums and nutmeg showing up which are accompanied by some marmite, apples, coriander, cardamom and a hint of ginger. Soft palate. Full bodied. Sweet. Complex. Some ginger in the finish. Overall impression: Great nose, pleasant flavor. I was expecting more. I definetely prefer Rochefort 10 for example. Thanks a lot bierkoning!
